86 Golf diesel fuel gauge acting strange/weird.
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:11:06 am »
I have been looking through the forum for a similar issue to mine but did not find what I would like to know. So if someone does know of a link that could help I would be much appreciated.

I am sure this is a common but my 86 N/A Diesel Golf's fuel gauge works sporadically. Going from one side to the other but seems to only do this at like 3/4 of a tank?? If I fill the tank it shows full and stays there but as I use fuel it starts to act weird and starts to float all over the place. If I go around a corner it drifts over to the full side but then back to the empty. I am going to assume the sending unit is bad?? If that is the case is there a simple fix or do I need to replace it?? Does anyone know of a place that sells a quality new one? Thanks, VW

I hate to send people over to the vortex.. but when it is not a diesel specific question the mk2 forum over there gets TONS of traffic, and you will get an answer faster.

That being said, I dunno lol

If your sending unit is worn they can get bad spots at certain parts. That will cause pretty much exactly what you are describing.

Thanks, I wasn't sure where on here to post the question and decided this was the only choice. I am not registered with vortex but I guess I could? I appreciate the help. If I get an answer over there I will try to post it here just in case it could help someone in the future.
Thanks, again.

I'll second the sending unit being bad.
