700r4 has only one gear (behind a diesel)
« on: March 15, 2013, 10:44:16 pm »
Got a used trans and stuck it behind wifeys 6.2 na. Almost Every position of the shift indicator gives the same thing: 1st gear. And it won't shift to second either. "park" yields something like park or neutral.
I have done something wrong when switching the valve bodies, but I don't know what.

Any suggestions?

TV cable not right, and swap in the diesel governor.
Also, is the shifter spool valve misaligned on the comb?
How about reverse?

No its not other the TV valve. It's something I've done wrong with the shifter. I had to swap the shifter arm, the valve body, the tail shaft and the governor. Park reverse neutral.. All give 1st gear. I just don't know enough about the valve body to know if one misplaced check ball will cause this or if I just screwed up switching the shifter arms.

What is shifter spool and comb?

The follow the shift lever shaft into the case, the valve it moves....if that is hooked  by the arm int he wrong place, you will get multiple simultaneous gears, or be way past the range of the shifter, presumably toward 1st.

My dumb ass had managed to NOT hook up the shifter arm to the valve it controls! The reason it didn't do first in park as well was because.. Well it was in park!

And you would know you have to pull the valve body to get that little metal arm into the valve it controls.

Thanks 745 you were just the person I was looking to hear from when I created this thread.

It seems to do fine.. Slight flare between the 2-3 shift when yer in it half way.. But I think it's always done that.

Hopefully this transmission lasts a while, or my wife is gonna kill me. She ain't made the first oil change since we bought this truck and the transmission went to slamming.

The police ones don't, but I'm not sure which part fixes that.  1 spline tighter on the TV cable  may help, but I wouldn't  go much further than that.
