Hi! I have a few AAZ engine. When I adjust the pump or cam timing, I usualy put the tranny in fifth gear and take the tire in my hands to move the car and crank shaft.  It's easy and I can do it without pain but... on a 1994 jetta it is almost impossible. I can move the car but it is really hard.

The question is... what can make that engine so stiff

1)the brake are ok
2)tranny is ok(it does the same thing if the clutch is press and in neutral the car moves easily)

Moreover, the consumption of this car is higher than normal. Around 7l/100km or 33USMPG or 40MPG maximum.

The car has 392 000km, the engine has never been rebuild, the injectors are new(10 000km), I rebuild the injection pump(change the primary pump), I change the oil frequently(synth). The compression is 475psi on all 4 cylinder.
So this car(like the others) should make at least 5.5l/100km or 43USMPG or 50MPG.

My father suggested that the catalysor may be blocked because when we bought the car(100 000km ago) there was a lot of black smoke coming out of this little blue thing.  Could a catalysor cause such a pressure???

I cannot thing that a 390 000km engine could still have stiff bearings...maybe the camshaft or the valves are the problem!!!!????

What do you think?

If the cat was so plugged it made it hard to turn the engine, I don't think you could get the engine to run.

Dunno what the problem is but I don't think it's the cat.

Whenever I need to turn the engine over, I take out the glow plugs. Muuuuch easier. ;)
