Mk1 Jetta Build
« on: February 22, 2013, 11:45:29 am »
Hey folks,  I've been getting tons of help about getting my Jetta on the road , so I thought I'd post a few pics.

Some details, bought the car with a blown n/a diesel mated to an auto trans. Body\floors are great - paint is an industrial green rolled on by PO. Have put in poly bushings ( front, rear and steering rack), new bj's, tie rods. Egt probe.  Will be dropping in a 1.6td, with a gov. mod in the pump 2.25 inch exhaust and finally some flames  ;)

Always like the Jettas. Just haven't had the fortune to find a good one around here.

Slow but sure. It has actually been a comedy of errors, - like one step forwards, 3 back. ie: broken bolts, stuff that won't fit, finding tdc,  wheel bearing falls off,  the flu from hell....  >:(

Engine is set to be mated with the auto trans. Front end has been  completely replaced.

I guess slow, but steady.   :)

Sorry, didn't see your post.

A K03, but I'm struggling right now with seized waste gates & trying to find a fitting for the turbo oil drain line - the one that screws into the bung on the oil pan.

Maybe I'll screw the waste gate issue and let the BOV do its job. ;D

BOV is on the "cold side" of things, so it popping wouldn't stop the flow of exhaust gases over the turbine.

Wastegate is "hot side"of things, it popping allows the turbo to still make boost (if you have the fuel to continue moving the turbine) but with no restriction hot side.. which I think is most of the k03's issue.

I love my k03, it is a pretty good feeling turbo. I did a pull from 1500-3400 in 5th up a pretty steep grade on my way to work, it happened like bwwuuuuAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. lol

It spools up quick to max spool and holds that no problem I find, I have it set to where it will hold 15 psi (with my manual controller) and if I really get in to it the waste gate opens but I am still spinning the turbo good too.

Are you planning on modding the tranny?

Hey, I knew the waste gate thing.....  ;) I'm just tired of the &@&@&# issues and was looking for a cheap asss lazy fix.   Good to hear the K03 works well - I can't wait to get it on the road.

What tranny mods are you taking about? Harder shifts, changing of *** pts? I was just going to clean out the filters and R&R the ATF?

Also, would you have a turbo drain fitting? buddy?  :)

Today. I installed the pass. side motor mt - while the mount bracket was on the engine. Used big ass balljoint & bushing tool. Took a lot of jigging  and making of some notched plates & pipe ends. to use the tool - should have installed it when mt was off engine  :-[

Got a K03 wastegate loose. So turbo is reading to install. Need to find turbo drain hose - VW  guru suggested "single wire" hydraulic hose ???? This wasn't the K03 I wanted to use - but will have to do. Am looking for a new waste gate and shaft for my best k03.

Also cut off the airbox brackets, and am thinking of K&N placement and air box design ( Basically to not let the air filter to suck in warm engine compartment air)

Slow and steady it goes.

You can add more clutch disks fairly easily. I don't know at what point you need to do this though. You can also swap the diff out very easily to get better gearing. I think that would be a good idea with the k03

from what i understand turning up pressure and having quality clutch discs is more important than having more of them.  if you are serious about building up the trans i'd contact jeff field at [email protected].  he knows his stuff and does performance trannys.  although with a pretty tame setup ur probably ok with the stock trans as long as its already in good shape.
