I'm looking for a 12mm head bolt, 1.6 NA, diesel engine. Mine is shot with 350,000+ miles on it. My head, injector pump, vacuum pump, etc, are good. So, a good short block will work as well. I'd like to see it running if possible.
If no used 1.6 diesels, does anyone know of a good 1.6 diesel rebuild shop in the central Maryland, Northern Virginia, D.C. Delaware, Southern PA area? I'd rather deal directly with the shop than have to ship the block.
Thanks,
Steve
sounds like crazy andy teritory... look for his aaz build.. ask him who he used and you will know who not to use... he been bent over more times then a crack whore on the engine rebuild...
besides that... im no help..
Well, the guy was a Ford machinist, so I guess I should have took that as a sign that he'd be out of his territory. His turnaround, measured in months, was inexcusable however. He's in Waynesboro, though, so he's out of your way.
As far as finding a machinist, I'm not sure. But The Shop Autowerx in Woodsboro MD can either direct you to one or find you a good used diesel block. They know folks, have stuff, like that. they are NICE folks, and will help however they can. If you stop by in person, say hi to Shop Mom! Oldest lady I've ever known to use the phrase 'needs more low'.

http://theshopautowerx.webs.com/Or just google 'VW machine shops in SEPA'. Will be surprised if that doesn't return a linkstorm, since SEPA/NJ/MD/SNY/NoVA is the heart of VW's enthusiasm on the east coast.
Thanks CrazyAndy. I'll call The Shop Autowerx to see if they can help. They're not too far from me.
I found
http://evwparts.com/ about 40 miles from where I live, 20 miles from work. He says that he's rebuilt a LOT of VW 1.6 diesels (and gas). His rebuild price is comparable to
http://www.vwdieselparts.com/ plus I save $200-$300 by not having to ship my engine.. Since it costs me an additional $250/month in gas, not having my diesel VW, I'll probably go with evwparts. I would end up taking many months ($$$$$ of gas) to complete the rebuild.
Anyone have good or bad rebuild experience with evwparts.com in Severna Park, Maryland?

sadly good gaskets/bearings and such are under 3bills...
need to see if needs bored.. of so add pistons but take 100 off due to pistons come with rings.. rings ~25/hole
the cost is in machine work... you can take table of clean parts... a creeper on a carbage can, have fully rebuilt long block in 6 or so hr..
me mysellf.. pull head, pistons rods in car.. clean up the bores.. see how the 25$/hole rings fit.. if good enough.. slap them in.. run it for 50k or so.. it will start to use oil around then... less then $300 rebuild you could do in car in 8 or so hr.. gets you another 50k to seek out the engine of wet dreams...
also if you did do that... it be dipped in gold for when you put in your "new one" and be worth 500-1k...
CRSMP5, Thanks for the suggestions. I'm sure I'll take that approach on the engine that I pull from the car as I rebuild it. Right now I don't have the time (building my house) so I'll probably have someone else rebuild my spare short block. In the mean time I'm getting 13 mpg in my big truck instead of 45 mpg while the VW is out of commission...
