Does the 1.9 IDI engines have the same bellhousing pattern and flywheel bolt pattern and the 1.6 IDI? I am having a steel flywheel made for my 1.6. If a 1.9 would be a bolt in I might try and find one down the line. Don't know how hard they are to come by in the US though.

Yes.
The flywheel bolts to the pressure plate, pressure plate to the crank on the 1.6 and 1.9, but yes. The 1.9 will have a bigger PP and flywheel than the 1.6. BUT that is just how it came stock, you can swap the 1.9 parts onto the 1.6 or the other way.
so yes

i would have it made for a 210mm clutch..
1.6s only came with a 200mm clutch and pressure plate..

I have a clutch, flywheel, bellhousing, 3 speed trans, starter for those old Ford 170 cubic inch inline 6 motors adapted to my 1.6.
Rules say steel flywheel so a guy is making me a steel one just like the Ford flywheel but with a VW bolt pattern and hole to fit VW crank. With a little work I got the real Ford flywheel to fit the VW. Its amazing how close they are to each other.

8.5" = about 216 mm, so a little bigger than stock 1.9. As long as the clutch material and pressure plate can hold then you are hopefuly fine.

The pressure plate had 6 springs in it originally. I took it apart and put 9 big block Buick valve springs in it. There was 3 spots made for springs but didn't have any. The Buick springs also have a little more pressure than the original springs. So it has allot more pressure than before.
