Need diagram for rear brake drum
« on: January 03, 2013, 03:58:48 pm »
I put new handbrake cables and hooked them up inside the rear drums, but I seem to be missing a part inside the drum. There's an arm the cable attaches to, but it just pivots back and forth and doesn't seem to engage anything inside the drum.

Does anyone know of a good diagram to see what I'm missing? The ones in the bentley aren't clear enough for me to see what I'm missing.

The arm it pulls on is part of the brake shoe, kind of hard for it to be missing. Also the bar between the shoes couldnt be missing and have it go together either.

The lever you pull doesn't engage anything it pushes the top of the shoe out. Take a closer look at its motion, you are likely just over looking it.

Google.ca is a marvelous invention ;) This took me 0.03 seconds to find.

The parking brake arm pushes on the side of the push rod. Thus pushing out the top of the shoe the arm is on.

The cables are hooked up to the parking brake arm. I know the rear drums work with the regular breaks. I could flop the parking brake arm left and right and it didn't seem to be connected to anything, just hanging there?

Sorry for the newb question, I'll go look at it again. Maybe I don't have the cables adjusted far enough at the lever.

They're riveted to the top, so if its riveted there, its gotta work. They wouldn't go together at all if it were any other way. If its bolted up and works with brake pedal, then its proper. Adjustment is likely necessary.

I guess I need to double check everything and make sure it matches up to that diagram.

My sympathies, It's a horrible shagging mess of a design, at least to look at, but it does work pretty well once you get your head around it.
Just a little threadjack, whats the best thing to put on the adjuster "wedge" to stop it sticking, or rusting in place? ???
