A3 - 95 turbo IP leak

(1/1)

Centurion:
I have a buddy who just bought a 95 - A3 - with a TD - I looked it over quickly - not a lotta wires over it - looked much like my one wire wonders - hot wire to the injection pump and crank till she smokes.

The ? I have is this - I noticed that it was leaking fuel of the IP - look at the top - and the double springs that enclose the throttle - well that is where it is leaking -

Hard to chance the seal? parts? - tools?

BTW - It rips my 90 TD all to heck - but It is stock.

I have not worked on this engine - or this family of engine - I am presuming it is simliar?

BTW - this engine was a drop in - the engine had something happen to it? Don't know - I was not there - know no history!

Thank you for your educated comment - uneducated opinions are welcome too!

I don't know what you are talking about with the acronym "IP", but if I read what you said right, it sounds like you might be talking about a leak around the throttle input shaft.  You can get a kit of o-rings and seals and replace this.  It's a O-ring, part number 4 in this diagram:

To remove the shaft, you will need to remove the governor cover from the main housing.  There is also a brass or bronze bushing that is pressed into the governor cover that the throttle input shaft bears against, that is not part of the o-ring and seal kit, but is a separate part you can get from a diesel fuel injection system specialist.  You'll need someone with the right tools to press out the old bushing and press in the new, if it's worn.  Probably just replace that o-ring and you'll fix that leak.  The 1.9lTD pumps have a lot of gizmo's and linkage, etc you might have to remove, but if you could figure out how to fix it yourself keeping pump installed in vehicle, vs removing the pump and having it rebuilt, you could save yourself a lot of money and learn some about your pump in the process.

Hope this helps... good luck.
