I would like to know the correct orientation of the passenger side motor mount. With the offset hole is it centered to the top or bottom of the bracket that it goes into? Or is it placed to one side or the other. I have yet to take my current one out but I know it is not correct because it was hammered in place and not seated all the way down. I doubt correct orientation was part of the process. I hate to cut one out only to install a good one in the wrong way.
Help me out here guys. I found one reference in the search about it being like a guy standing on his head. What is that supposed to mean?

Assuming its an mk1, The hole should be closest to the bottom of the bracket on a new mount! Double check the bracket for which is top and bottom before pressing in, they are a B**tch to get back out in one piece!
Thanks man, I was able to get the bracket out of the car this afternoon and the metal sleeve it 90 degrees off. The hole is actually closest to the engine. If I install it as you recommend the engine would be a little higher and there would be more play in the system and allow me to adjust the position of the engine. The previous setup had the engine being pulled tight in the mount.
I will be using the freezer and torch combination along with a good amount of grease and pressure.
Worked on the front bearing replacement last weekend and that went pretty well using a simple setup. Hoping for the best again.

Is this a real showstopper or just going to mean a bit of extra vibration?
We had ours put in upside down at first because the original mount was so shot but we just assumed it was the correct way. We couldn't get the mount bolted back in that way though.

Misaligned mounts can mess-up shift linkage, exhaust & inner CVs.
I just installed a new passenger side mount in my 81 (MK I) Caddy. I bought a used bracket with a trashed mount from a MK I Rabbit and had some one press in a new VW OE mount, so that I can do a swap instead of bringing the Caddy bracket to and waiting on the machine shop.
On the left is the old trashed mount removed from the bracket and on the right is the new VW OE mount pressed in. Both mounts (in the pic) are in the correct orientation (arrows pointing up). The old mount on the left has been crushed so the wide gap on top is gone and the bottom rubber ripped and opened a big gap there and the bolt hole is now at or above center. (note: the mount on the left is after market (prob. inferior) to the VW OE mount on the right so do not look the same)
There's lot's of confusing pics on the web as to the correct orientation of the mount. The easiest way to remember is that the arrow (cast into in the rubber, above the bolt hole) points up.

This is worth noting, there are a LOT of the other style mounts out there, and they are marginal in my experience even for a stock gasser.
