Gas and Diesel have a different starter. The mk1-2-3 diesel with exception to the late mk3 tdi were the same.. But nearly twice as powerful as a gas starter.

Hang on here, MK1 and early MK2 diesel are the same, late MK2 and MK3 diesel (Canada) are the same (they have the smaller diameter body). I'm not sure where the TDI fits in but dimensionally it is the same as the late mk2 and Mk3s.

I'm only talking about the diesel starters.

Ahh yes sorry when I said the same i meant application. Early diesel starters are huge and non gear reduction. I have a late mk2 and tdi starter in my hands right now. There is no shaft to interact wih the 020 trans and vice versa.

Cannot use tdi starter on 020 trans.

Cannot use 020 starter on 02A trans.

8v, you can use a TDI auto starter on the old 020, but it is the ALH auto...don't know if the AHU even had an auto option.

AHU did not have an auto option in North America.

Yes, the ALH TDI auto starter works on the 020.

8v are you use the AHU starter won't work on the 020?

It honestly looks that way..

The snout sticks out further meaning the gear also sticks out further in its resting position.

On rock auto looking at pics the 1z auto starter looks identical to an 020 1.6 starter. Standard trans starter definitely not the same though.

There is no such thing this side of the pond.
