Can anyone give me any idea what this engine is. It's in a Caddy I'm looking at and the owner has no clue.

Turbo diesel. Most likely a 1.6 liter, but I can't tell for sure.

it has a turbo diesel pump on it, and a 1.6 or 1.5 litre cylinder head.  Because of the way the picture is taken, I can't tell if it's hydraulic or solid lifter.  The block can't be seen very well in the pics so I can't really tell you if it's a 1.6 block or a 1.5 block or something else.  To tell if it's a turbo block I'd need the engine # off of it.  For the cylinder head I'd need the casting # from it to tell you what it was.  If it is a factory set up (ie if no one has been mixing and matching parts) then it is a 1.6 turbo diesel with either a solid lifter or hydraulic cylinder head.  People do routinely mix and match engines and heads and injection pumps on these cars however so it is possible you may have a mixed combination of things there.

Further news---According to the owner, it's from a 1983 Jetta, so that prolly means solid lifter.

Is there a listing somewhere of the Engine/Block #s and Head Casting #s ??

The bottom of the block is marked 068 103 011 and this is the head. It was always my understanding that the hump between cylinders 2 and 3 designates a hydraylic engine, but this came out of an original 1983 Jetta (mechanical lifter)?????

Moved to General.  Not IDI engine / power enhancement related.
