ABA intake manifold
« on: December 02, 2009, 06:57:42 pm »
Possibly a dumb question, but I have one sitting around.  Would the wraparound-style 2.0 intake off an ABA be any kind of upgrade?  Is it even usable?  Seems like replacing the intake manifold is a common upgrade, and I'm getting ready to pipe an intercooler, so I want to get it all done at the same time.

The intake on an aba(2L) has the intake ports on the front of the engine, not the back like on the diesels.   I don't know if you could even flip the mani around to fit?  I think the turbo would be in the way...

the ports on the head are totally different and spaced differently, so even if it would clear the turbo, it still wont bolt up.

if I remember right the SDI will clear an NA pump, but for a turbo application, even if it did clear the turbo pump, its made of plastic.

there are a few TDI guys who have blown them apart by running boost through them.

Someone should mold it and cast it.

i never heard of them blowing up, i wouldn't be concerned with that any way tho, lots of boosted cars have plastic intakes

I'd be more afraid of the plastic melting being so close to the turbo

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D

I wouldn't be concerned about it melting.  I'm sure they were smart enough to use a thermoset plastic.  In which case it won't be melting.

well, to be honest, most of the burst SDI intakes were running pretty high boost numbers.

the heat certainly weakened the plastic and the 35+ PSI was too much for it.

more than likely it would be fine at lower boost pressures, but the interference with the turbo pump kinda ruins it anyway.
