ARP TDI rod bolt, almost fits
« on: November 12, 2012, 01:51:23 pm »
ARP does not make a rod bolt for the TDI.

but they make rod bolts that look like they might work.

VW ahu and alh rod bolts are m8 x 45mm x 1.0 thread pitch   AAZ rod bolts are m8 x 42mm x 1.0

I ask arp if  the ford zetec 1.6 rod bolt 151-6003 thread pitch is m8 x 1.0? the response was .....

to me
The 151-6003 is an M8 x 1.0 x 44.5mm under head. ______________________________________________________

I ask ARP:
does A R P make a rod bolt for the vw tdi 1.9L diesel engine?   namely the 1Z,  AHU,  ALH,?

response:
We do not offer a rod bolt for that application. Unfortunately there have been no talks or plans in making them, as we really do not get many inquiries for them.

some information is still missing like what is the diameter of the shank of the zetec bolt where it is close to a press fit in the rod, where the two halves meet, and also is the location of the end of the shank near the threads far enough down the bolt to keep the cap aligned,

the actual ARP  151-6003 rod bolt or a  zetec 1.6 rod bolt and a tdi rod would be needed to get the right answer to this experiment.  anyone in europe want to get one of these and test it then tell us if it worked?  zetec 1.6 engines were not sold in the USA.

arp-151-6023 this is the part number for a package of two 1.6 zetec  rod bolts  for $17 plus shipping if someone wants to try the lottery ticket approach and hope to find a winner,  this has never been done before, It may not work.  downside? you might waste $17.  refund maybe? remember to tell us if it worked.

although it is 9mm and wont fit in a tdi rod, the vr6 rod bolt I have is marked 12.9.   from internet information sources, grade 12.9 bolts are  174,000 psi strength.  the alh rod bolt I have does not have a 12.9 marking but is probably grade 12.9.  rod bolts are lower on the list of things that can go wrong compared to a timing belt or a failed lifter, but I would like to buy the best rod bolt I  can get.

if it means anything, several mercedes benz diesel engines have 8mm rod bolts possibly made by the same company that makes vw rod bolts elring

anybody notice that alh rod bolts are not an interference fit? real close but certainly not press fit .

if money is no object $600 will buy a set of rods that are very nice

for an engine with a 4000 rpm redline

My machinist has said that Audi did something similar. The Turbos had 9mm bolts and the non turbos he said had 8mm. I don't know how true that is, but if it is I would think that would work for you.

What about going the other way and having .5mm shaved off, or whatever the measurement is, from the 302 rod bolts so they fit in the rod?

I think it's cool to innovate and I'd like to hear which bolts you use and how it works out.  It would still be good to bear in mind that a set of eight of the actual VW bolts can be had for less than $30.

Yeah, and if you need stronger rod bolts, chances are you need stronger rods, so just get the Rosten's.

I know this is a super old thread, but just wanted to add to it. I recently installed ARP rod bolts into an ALH. I used ARP kit 151-6003 for the Ford Focus Zetec 1.6L. They didn't fit through the holes in the rod cap so I drilled the rod cap with a size R bit. .339" was the nearest I could get to for the bolt diameter. I lubed them up with the supplied ARP lube and torqued them to 22 ft-lbs plus 90 degrees. I checked the oil clearance with plastigauge on each rod then retorqued them and rotated the engine after the final tightening of each rod, making sure that the engine rotated without a problem. The rod bolts for the Zetec have the same diameter and pitch of M8 x 1.0, are 0.5 mm shorter than the original ALH rod bolt and have a 3/8" 12-point head.

I also installed ARP main studs, I used kit 202-5401 for Nissan L20 engines. And installed ARP kit 204-4706 for the ALH.

So far I've driven the car about 200 miles and produced upwards of 34 pounds of boost with the Garrett GTB2260VK turbocharger and have hit over 4,000 rpm. I haven't have any problems as of yet.

Hope this helps anyone that is wanting to build up their ALH.
