As for the 1.5's I thought they had major issues with headgasket bolts cracking the block? I know for a fact the early 1.5's had some major oil leak issues.

who brought the 1.5 into the topic?
those are JUNK for the most part..
alot of them came from the factory with cracked blocks..
mine took a bit north of 35psi to separate the head from the block..
1.6 = cheap, simple, safe (parents/insurance), and hopefully reliable enough to not have the coolant lines break off 500k from home like my 1.8t...
1.9 = more expensive (in Canada) possibly more reliable than a 1.6 but I'm not experienced enough to decide one way or another, and slightly heavier which is a downside when I have to drive up to Edmonton about twice a month with some essential engine component in my car
I'm also not looking for huge power, nor do I have the money or time to turn around and track down a 1.9AAZ to get put in her, so, 1.6 it is.
Man, that was a really fun road trip
The engine got back from the re builders over the weekend, and I think it is looking absolutely amazing:

yea, seen DOZENS of broken rods sticking thru 1.9 blocks in the last couple years..
Too many Canucks pushing more power than you guys down there on your 1.6's.. that is all.
