I tried that before, they did a half decent job of getting the spot out but they left a lot of cheap glitter behind

Well, last night went down to an upholstery cleaning establishment known as "the Cadillac lounge".  Turned out to be a price gouge, the girls were perfectly willing to suck the soot out of the seats, but in the process, got them all wet with spit.  I then had to pay them again to go through and blow all the seats dry.  Thats fricking highway robbery, im not paying for what I consider to be the same service twice in a row.  Additionally, as you said, I did notice a residue of glitter and lip gloss.  Goddam hookers.

Ill just stick to renting a steam cleaner I think.  It may not be as enjoyable to watch, but I think it might do a better job at a lower price.

All I can do after you said that is cringe while mumbling 'ow ow ow ow ow'.   Steam like that burns!

But seriously, haven't noticed anything like this.  I got my car's rust holes sorted for state inspection, as well as replacing my rear hatch seal as a matter of procedure, so no soot here yet.  Also have vinyl seats, so might not be as immediately apparent.  Does give me reason to wipe down the seats and trunk are when I pull the car out of the barn to install the 1.9TD after I build it.

Ow . . . steam burns . . .

I had the ultimate sooty back cover when I bought the car.  I found some of the draft spots and extended the tailpipe but every once in a while I get "that smell" sneaking in.  No not "That Smell" either.  The sooty diesel one.
