Motor swapping options
« on: March 05, 2006, 05:47:44 pm »
For those who know their stuff: Is it worth the $$ to plant a TDI motor into an A1 Rabbit? Anyone that has done it, what was the total cost?? I assume their is a load to do? Info would be appreciated. I've had my rabbit for about 4 years and haven't driven it all that much. I'll not let it go but I want to Swap out the na motor for a TD or TDi. From what Ive been reading a TD swap is straight forward? All the driveshafts brakes etc can stay? If there is a post on this please direct me to it. Thanks.

um,,ive got about 4500-5000 $us in my tdi swap inmy 79 rabbit, but it can be done way cheaper than i did,,tome cost wasnt an issue,,,it still uses a1 trans+axles, although you could swap in the later modelstuff too,,,and i made it non electronic,,thats 1 thing to think of :electronic,or mechanical,,,personally i like mine mechanical, its an easier install,,,,lots of power, first and second are useless, and itll finally get goin in 3rd,,,raceware head studs+mains, kerma race 520 nozzles, total seal rings, centerforce clutch, 12mm injector pump,,,swapping it wasnt bad, just like any other engine,,,takin my time doin it right,it tookabout 8-9 months to build it,, about 2 weeks of a few hours here+there to get it in and running,,,it sat for a month or 2 after i built it, because im tryin tosell my house, and didnt wanna get involved with the swap, but injanuary,i decided to doit,,,glad i did!!!!need to borrow a gtech, ibet its gotta be in the hi 14s,,maybe when i go to ny for  a family visit,,,ill "test" at my hidden 1/4 test site ,and at least get an idea from trap speed,,when we were kids we measured out 1320 feet on a backroad, and the markers are stil there too :D
