6 speed vr tranny on idi motor?
« on: October 18, 2012, 09:33:14 pm »
I'm trying to plan my drivetrain out and I thought it would be cool as balls to have a 6 speed in my motor build (looking for 225+hp) I should be revving close to the same as the vr would be, a little under. I'm just concerned I will be smashing through gears more than I'm on the throttle... Anyone have an idea?

Thanks, Lee

the VR trans has a VR bolt pattern.

the 4 cylinder trans has a 4 cylinder bolt pattern..

they are VERY DIFFERENT..

if you have a 6 spd bolted up, its not from a VR..

if you have a VR trans, you cant bolt it up to a 4 cyl..

All you need to do is change the bell housing...

It's very easy to do. I'm more worried about the gearing

Is that a fact?  This gives me all sorts of new ideas....

You can check the gear ratios yourself, you only need to look up the transmission code, usually three letters on top of the transmission
casing right next to the bell housing. Often some wire wheeling is needed before the letters show.

Hello Dudes and Dudettes, here is a guy who swapped 5 for 6 in an A2 with an ABA block, don't know if the ABA mounting holes are the same as an ID block though.

All 4 cylinder VW motors have the same bolt pattern. Yes vr's are different. All you do is swap bell housings an this WILL WORK. How do you take out the diff? Bell housing comes off.

The purpose with this thread is about gearing. I know the rest will work. I don't understand the gear ratio thing very well, that's why I'm asking.

If you have the transmission code   ( ATB, CEY or whatever )

..you will know the gearing just by googling "02A gear ratios".

You could use the GQM 6-speed from the mkv(?) golf... basically it's a 02a/j with a 6th bolted on...

just my $0.02

as long as there is the means to mount a vehicle speed sensor,
aren't the newer cars using the abs sensors to generate a speed signal?

Hmm I'll have to look into that tranny. Although I expect it would cost twice as much as will already be payin for the vr. And I wont be running an in tranny speedo.

As for looking up the tranny code, I don't have the tranny yet. I'm looking Ito wether it will actually work before I drop a couple grand on the swap.

I guess I'm looking at numbers for the night.
