hey,,i cant find a new "cold start cable" for my 79 diesel on a bunch of sites and stuff,,,im using easy search stuff like "cable" too,,and it doesnt come up,and whats this ekta whatever thing,,like a vw part number looker-upper?? :? :?:
Hey, hillfolk'r-
I think it was about a year ago I was looking for a new cold start cable for my '81 pickup. These are like the westmoreland rabbits that have the cable exit the dash just to the right of the instrument cluster, more or less mirroring the headlight switch. IIRC on the earlier rabbits like yours it comes out of the left side of the steering column. Regardless, they are the same part number, 171 711 501 A. They used a bit different knob and bracketry, but the cables are the same I guess.
I looked around quite a bit and was not able to find anywhere that had replacement cables, though I was able to find alot of A2's at the wreckers that had the later-style setup, a pull handle that exits the lower left dash above the knee bar (or maybe integral with the knee bar?). Anyhow these A2 cables seemed to be in good condition, and a bit beefier on the pull-end, even though it's plasic. I decided to retofit my pickup with the A2 style cold-start cable and it was a easy fit. However, I didn't want to have the big t-pull handle, so I used the back part of the t-handle with a early knob like you'd have (111 941 541 B), and it's been working great since. I see that the A2 cold start handles are listed as 3A0 711 501 and 191 711 501 C. I don't know if these are still available new.
the Et&@ is a electronic parts catalouge, there is a foreign-based online version here-
http://etka.auto2.ru/?lang=engwith your cable showing up here:
http://etka.auto2.ru/vw/GO/1979/27/55/341377/Sorry they don't make the part anymore (AFAIK) but I'd just recommend finding one from a A2 (or A1 if you can) at the wreckers.
Hope this helps.
also mk1 jettas had the t pull like the a2s. cause of them being german built i guess...
Thanks, Trev0rbr; that's good to know.
illhaveta keep an eye out at the boneyards,,,cool that 80+earlier,and 81 up a1 cables are the same,,i sorta thought theylooked similar(ive had 81 up,and pre 80 a1's),,,,sucks its not avalable new,,,,,mines got splits in the outer sheath,,and when its real cold,,you go to pu*** back in it springs out,,gotta keep pressure on the knob,,it sometimes comes undone at the dash, where the cable is crimped to the part that gets attatched to the dashwith the circlips,,itried recrimping,,but its had it,,its working now, sorta,,illget one some day,,yea my 84 td was like an a2 style cable,,,like my 91((aargh too many cars,or am i gettin too old?)ill check out that ekta site,,thanks for all the help yall,,keep dieselin' it!!
I'll be elminating the cold start cable on the GTD. Its in good condition, 81 style... my 79 has the steering column mount one but as said according to EKTA they are the same. I could sell you mine off the GTD if you want. I don't have a need for it since I'm not running this in the winter nor using mechanical cold start

Once upon a time I had a 85 Ford Tempo diesel. The advance on it was vaccuum operated & the temp control vaccuum switch failed.
>$300 from Ford
I collected the parts & planned to 'MacGyver' it with a ten-speed bike shifter & cable, and put a spring return on the pump control lever.
Wouldn't have been exactly OEM, but woulda worked.
I accidentally found a suitable vaccuum switch on a Toyota or Honda that fit & worked perfectly, $5 junkyard part, so I never ended up using my ghetto mod idea.
But it's a thought, in case anyone's interested...
