Author Topic: No fuel, bad pump? (Read 6783 times)

Hey guys, went to start my car the other night at my buds house and it wouldent go had to have it towed home so now its sitting in the garage. The first thought i had was glow plugs so i tested them and sure enough to were bad, but still no start, so i start checking for fuel and sure enough there is none, I did have the injection lines off to change the plugs but i have done this before without a problem. so now im thinking my fuel pumps shot. what i need to know from you guys is where the fuel pump is (i assume its in the tank) and how do I go about getting it out. A quik response would be awsome so thanks in advance.

check your return lines. If one is leaky then it can cause the system to bleed out and lose it's prime.

Checked over the lines already and they all looked good, how big of a leak would it need to loose its prime?

The smaller the leak, the longer it will take to bleed out the system. If there is no sign of a leak then that may or may not be your problem. Pumps rarely crap out, that's why I suggested it.

yeah. I'm pretty sure its the pump, what i would really like to know is where the pump is, or is it my injection pump thats caved?

What kind of car is it? Typically only TDI's had lift pumps (not sure about the 1.9TD).

its a 1991 Golf with a 1,6 NA

shut down solenoid? I know on my cummins the go all the time, its the same type pump on ur car so maybe the same problem. You could try pulling it than puttin it back in with out the spring and plunger, make sure you have another way to shut it down the key wont shut it down. You could test the wire going to it to make sure it has 12volts. you could turn your key on than remove the wire and replace it listing for a click. or you could even run a jumper cable from your battery to it.

Rember that the solenoid must have 12volts for it to open and alow fuel to flow.

the pic below shows the same ve pump but for 6cyl. I dont own a vw anymore and don't rember if they have the same kill lever. The solenoid is the one with the blue wire.

Yup, probalby doesn't have a fuel pump (aside from the one built into the injection pump).

My 1.6NA has the solenoid shown in the picture on the top rear of the pump, but not the kill switch assembly on the side. Try to measure and make sure it's getting 12 volts to the solenoid. If not, that's the problem. If so, then it's more complicated... Do you have the clear fuel line going into the injection pump. If so, can you see fuel in it, or are there bubbles or air in there?

My buddys car has bubbles in his line what does that mean???

It has no fuel at all in the line leading to the pump.

like i said check your solenoid for 12volts. if you dont have a voltage meter, run a jumper wire direct from the battery. Or pull the solenoid out removing the plunger and spring. Than put it back in and try and try to start it.

replacing your fuel filter woudln't hurt.

Bubbles seems to mean it's sucking air into the system somewhere upstream of the IP. It'll filter them out by itself it there aren't too many, but I figure its not really good for it.

No fuel at all means the IP has lost it's prime, and you need to reprime it. There's a couple of other threads on here from a few months back that go into detail on this. If it airlocked the injectors, you might need to bleed them too.

Ok seems that my fuel shut down silenoid was the problem its not getting power at all so im gonna run some new lines tonight i assume its just a break in there somewhere.
