i always though it'd be cool if someone built a duramax powered camaro, or a cummins powered charger, or perhaps a power stroke mustang.  i'm surprised it hasn't been done yet, what's everyone elses thoughs?

Well...

Weight would be the first problem.

Second, I'd wonder about engine HEIGHT being a problem.

Other than that, I don't see why not, except for the fact that gassers are the only acceptable engines for muscle cars :roll:

And, yes, similar opposition exists to the Lamborghini Gallardo TDI prototype.

Yes, Gallardo TDI. Apparently the 5.0L V10 TDI drops right in in place of the Lambo 5.0L V10 gasser.

I don't know how much you guys consider the El camino a muscle car, but if you do, actress Daryl Hannah drives one converted to diesel (they were never stock diesel were they?).  Not only that but she drives it on B100.  For what it's worth. 8)

most of the diesel truck engines chevy, dodge, ford, are all about the same size as the v8's that my beloved muslce cars once harbored.

The 6.5 and 6.2 liter chevy diesels even bolt to the same tranny as a chevy 350 gas.  The problem is that the diesel's don't rev much.  I think redline on the V-8 diesels is around 3,000 or maybe 3,500.  A built up Chevy gas V-8 can be made to approach 7,000rpm or more.  Now, the diesel torque could probably be made to compensate for that, but it would have to be regeared.

That would be sort of funny having a 600ft lbs cummins diesel in a car.  The first three gears would probably be useless it would have so much torque...

no thats not so true. diesels have lots of torque but their horsepower is lacking.  you can get 700ftlb of torque cumming for instance, but they wont have the hp of a 700ftlb gasser.

the first 3 gears would still be needed. my dads cummins diesel has a first gear thats lower than my rabbit! his cummins absolutely crawls in first.

you can hook that truck up to a tree and very slowly let out the clutch and it will spin the tires untill the pumpkin is in the dirt and all of this without even touching the throttle petal.

Somewhere I've got a pic I've saved of a '49 Merc hotrod with Cummins power, just can't find it now  :oops:
That's a heavy engine (believe me, I know!) but it'd make an ideal power plant for that kind of "Lead Sled" rod. Just back up the trany with a Gear Vendors O.D. and yer good to go.

The rev limiter lies at 5K on the 6.5TD, if my dad's tach can be believed.

Redline is 3.5K, however.

I´ve heard a rumor that someone here in Finland is building a Mustang with Mercedes 3,0 turbodiesel and going to drag race it :shock:

How about you just replace the 350 that is already in the car with a GM 350 diesel? The swap would go easy, and you wouldn't have to worrie about anything else since the motor is only gonna last 50k miles before it kicks the bucket.

The 5.9 cummins I've got would be way to tall to go in a sports car. Lots of people are putting them in 2wd 1500 trucks. But I dont think it would fit in a car.

LOL, Ive only seen them last 50k after spending 40k of that on the tow-hook!

cut the weight some by finding an ultra rare 6v 53 alum block detroit  2 stroke,yea right,,,6.2-6.5 gm redline is 3500,,theyare junk,,bad blocks heads crack,,,,,AERA recommends replacing gm injectors every50k,cause spray patterngets ugly+causes excess heat,and cracks head,,now replacing injectors every50kdoesnt provide me with the diesel benifit ,,cranks break etc,,iwork on them alot,,theyr junk,,powerstroke7.3 is a joke,,i dont consider it a heavy dutydieselengine,they got junk stamped sheetmetal rockers!!!,,,and the new one6.0  is worse,,wait for all that internal brazed tubing for oil+fuelsystems starts tofracture after time,,,,,,,wanna get a realdiesel,get a b series(besides the vw),,,,,,,,,,iwas thinkina cool run round town truck,,for trips tostore home depot,etc,,would be a nice lil ranger or s10with a 4 cyl b series ,,,,,,deoshowed me some dude w/a ranger w/a 4b,,had like 300hp/500 ftpds,,13s in the 1/4,,maybe 12s??i cant remember,,,,,this is fun,,jus ramblin'on,,,,,,,,,
