I tore my newly acquired 1.9 down to inspect it. It looks ok inside, except for some curious marks on the head in cylinder #4. It looks like someone shot it with #8 birdshot, and put about 10 pinholes in the head.

What do you think caused this? More importantly, is it ok to run? Thanks guys.

those marks could just be caused by detonation of overly rich fuel mixture. The injector in that cylinder could have been leaking a bit or not spraying properly. The valves and pistons look unscathed from what I can see in the pictures so I doubt there has been any interference contact. Just for reference: you have the right cam pulley. It is a taper lock pulley. I don't know why the keyway is there but I've never used it. There is no key. When you put the belt on you align the crank and injecto pump sprockets, then you put the belt on the cam sprocket and let it float free, put a bit of tension on it, then tighten the taper lock on the cam pulley. The cylinder head bolts are a 12 point star bolt, not a torx. They are special stretch bolts and can only be used once. If you are in Toronto you can get replacements for $2 each (I know a place that sells them). Outside of TO look around wherever you are and don't buy the first ones you see as the price varies a lot (I have seen them sold for $14 each, they are not worth that). The engine looks like it hasn't been run that much. Usually the valves are covered in carbon. It looks rebuilt to me. I would hazard the opinion that it may never have been run since the rebuild. It looks very fresh.

Anyway good luck with it. Definately a nice price to pay for an engine in that condition.

Thanks for the information. I have never torn a diesel apart before. I was amazed at how good it looked inside. I was suspicious of a blow up since all of the pulleys were loose on the front of the engine and the crank nose and rear of the crank pulley were scored some. You might just be right about the rebuilt head then. That would be excellent. I need some good luck in my life for a change.

Yeah, that head hasn't been run since it was rebuilt or cleaned up. The damage may be non-operational or from a previous failure. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it as long as there is no damage to the cylinder wall.

Looks like the engine took somthing into the cylinder and then as it started its compression stroke, they where forced against the head. Was there any marks on the top of the piston in that cylinder.

also looks like that head has been shaved a bit. There are usually small indented areas between the valves. On that head those areas are not present.
