4spd is one length, 5spd is another. Only two lengths.
yup.. if your old trans was a 4 spd, then the push rod will NEVER work in a 5 spd..
Did you use the little plastic clutch centering tool?
Clutch plate installed like in the diagram with the little "outie belly button" oriented correct?
While we are at it (a little sidetracking here to attempt to avoid any other problems.....like one other fellow who frequents this forum had last year when he put an engine together and then roached his crank end....

) did you use some blue locktite on those pressure plate /crankshaft bolts and torque them to (is it) 72 ft. lbs.?
How about the little 9 mm bolts which only go to 15 lbs.? Just checking......hate to see this crank have to come out and go to machine shop like the last guy!
I always email brokevw in these situations. He always has asked me if the arm on the trans can be lifted past the 9:00 position. If it can then something isn't right. Another thing he has pointed out is the finger the guys have said already. It doesn't have to "look" bad. If it is bad it won't push on the plate and it will seem as the clutch won't work. You should have pressure though if the PP is pushing against the plate and the plate on the pushrod. Check out piece number 20 in the diagram above and see if it has a crack...or email Brokevw for things to check.
Yes I used new bolts with locktite(they came that way) and torqued them correctly. I believe i put the plate in the right way. The arm does not go past 9 O'clock. I will go out and look at the arm again.
Clutch is fixed. It was completely an novice mistake from me!!!!!! I reread the Bentley and read everything everyone said and realized that the arm was supposed to be within about a 1/2" from engaging when properly adjusted. I had to open the adjustment up quite a bit to get there. When I did, all was fine.

Kinda embarrassing, but I'm learning as I go. I actually drove the car a mile down the road tonight. I still have some small leaks to track down, and need to do one more cycle of tightening on the headbolts, and numerous other small things, but it is running!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ty for everyone's patience!!!!! I know I've been a real pain, but hopefully I've learned alot from this
