Need help finding a couple of turbos for my 1984 Winnebago Lesharo motorhomes, the wastegates have rusted out on both, one is still working ok up to 15psi, the other howls above 8psi. I have a spare core turbo that is dead and needs a cartidge for comparison, it is physically very similar to the D24T 6 cyl VW engine as found in the Volvo 740, a T3 exhaust flange, similar housing, one line fitment is different and it is clocked differently also. It is a Garrett turbo, but no id tags left...
I am just looking to keep these units running, old cores are fine if they are not rusty...or NOS stock etc. I don't want to lay out $1000 on rebuilt turbos right now unless all else fails in my search.
Greg

you need new turbos it sounds like, not wastegates..

maybe check for boost leaks, if one howls above 8psi.
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

What rusted out on the waste gates? The actuator or the exhaust housing?

So far I have found out they are Garrett TAO305 turbos, only fitted to that model of engine (Renault J8S XXX), the Volvo is a TAO307 and the same 0.36 A/R. Mercedes is also similar but bigger .42 A/R TAO304/314. All these turbos are obsolete, yes rebuildable but expensive ($1000-1600 quotes). Working on pics.

Vw TAO304 based t3 is also similar (1.6 td turbo)...might have to go with it. My problem with rebuilds is the parts I have are rusted badly, I won't get many years of service or they will call and say it was a no go with the core, the waste gates are missing, meaning not there rusted away years ago and the exhaust housing doesn't look much better. I will contact xsboost and see though...
