1.6/1.9 Diesel Starter Needed in NYC
« on: June 27, 2012, 08:58:55 pm »
Hello All,

I am in a bit of a crunch...  On my way to getting married yeasterday my Diesel Vanagon with a 1.9AAZ died.  Still got married but now I got a dead van and I live in Brooklyn, NY where we have to move the vehicle from side to side each day.  Anyone out there in my area happen to have a good working starter?  Even AutoZone seems to be out in the warehouse and they dont know when it will come in.

All best...

Jason

If you take the bus to Del Water Gap I can have one waiting for you?? I own a repair shop and will provide it at cost.

Another option is to send to me ( takes a day) I will have it rebuilt and send back

This might just work!  Thanks so much...  I have to call Pep Boys in the AM to see if they could locate one...  Made by ProStart?  Well, whatever at this point, should probably upgrade to the TDI starter with the adapter plate but hands are kind of tied at this point.  I did not know that there were buses going to DWG every hour?  I have to get a couple things done for work first thing in the AM and I will see if I might get a ticket.  How much is your starter that you have?  Thank you so much for helping out, I really appreciate it!

All best...

Jason

Hey Hey,

I did end up finding a local re-builder that was only blocks away from me.  Still dont have the starter back as it seems to be a bit different starter than they expected, something about a reverse turning armature.  Keeping my fingers crossed that all is ok.

Thanks for the offer, depending on what happens I might have to take you up on it!

All best...

We are getting under control hopefully...  on the upside it is a good ole original German Bosch that the re-builder assured me is pretty much infinitely rebuild-able.

I used to restore old British cars and we rebuilt old Lucas stuff all the time, cant believe that rebuilding did not even occur to me as this day in age I am so used to everything just gets replaced.  Really happy to have found a place that has been doing it for ever and is still in business.

As for the wife, she only sends the best aura to the van...  Even gave it the name Bichi Bichi...  which is apparently diarrhea in Japanese.

Well, not quite yet...  My rebuilder was able to rebuild it but when I installed it she was a no go...  Took it back out and bench tested it but nothing.  When I took it back they told me that the armature was pretty bad off and must not have taken to soldering as much as they hoped.  So, now they are looking into finding a new armature or another starter.

Never realized that this was such a rare part...
