1980 vw caddy 1.5 diesel 4 speed
« on: June 18, 2012, 08:15:13 pm »
Looking at picking one. There was rust on the strut towers one has been repaired by the owner; looks good, welds are are strong. The other shock tower is good but has a bit of rust more towards the grill. Engine is a 1.5 with a 4 speed. The car doesn't run he's having issues with the solenoid that cuts the fuel on shut off.. and turns the fuel on for running. Rebuilt injector pump. I'm unsure of the miles ... Dash is cracked but the seats are good, headliner has been replaced. Has a topper and some extra fenders. It's blue and has some surface rust. New bumpers. He's has $1300 into it, more if he fixes the other strut tower. And more if he gets it running. I think I would like to get it running, I'm good with electronics and it sounds like he's having some kind of solenoid issue. I thinking I could get it for $1500 with the other tower fixed. Here is the only pic I got <br />

Sorry for the long post just wanna know what im getting into hopefully many mpg's!

Where are you located? I wouldn't pay more than $300 judging by that pic and your description but your location may dictate otherwise.

I would want to know who rebuilt the pump. If it came from the state of NC I would ask many more questions. I think that is not a 1,000.00 car myself, but it is worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it.

I would guess 90% that it is the feed wire to the fuel seliniod...that bay looks like it could have a mouse colony in it and that wire is so small it can brake inside the insulation enough to have your issues and look fine on the outside.

from the looks of that passenger side strut tower.......either the strut is coming out the top or that whole tower is coming off ;D.  and also, the timing belt looks newish, and the cover is sitting there as well.  My two cents (it's really only worth .4 ;D), go buy the cut off solenoid for twenty bucks and put it in real quick to see if it's the issue.  If she doesn't fire, talk about the timing and offer 300.  Myself, without much ability to take on something like that, would run like hell.  But.....anything's possible

underneath all that.....

this is a PARTS RIG at best.. i would buy it with the plans of finding another shell..

once these things START to rust, they dont stop. and that looks like the rust is PRETTY BAD..
