ok well what parts do you have for the swap? If you have two full cars that is a great thing. The less stuff you have the more complicated it gets, but overall it sounds like a pretty easy swap.

I think you should be in excellent shape then. I would use the complete tdi harness and cluster for obvious reasons. As long as you take your time should be straight forward. The only thing I dont know about is the auto tranny.

Never done it, never heard of it done, but I would get out the books and see if they would help. See what alldata or whatever says each job would be for replacement and then double it since you have to do it 2 times. Tell the guy that is what the books say and it won't be over that, but you don't want to hurt yourself either.

well not 2x per say... gut 2 build 1... no matter what its expected that not all the time would be paid at say 50/hr... but i do not wanna say ok 2k here it is and then 200hr later its done.. LOL..

since both auto cables/clutch type stuff not a converion.. so time savings there.. till the 300k auto dies he not willing to learn standard.. even though now would be the time..

but its been decided to buy the clean dent/rust free vr6 00 mk4 for 300... and let him build up his funds to do a body swap down the road.. bent valves as he did not take advice over 6mo ago to do his chains that failed..

Are you trying to keep both cars auto?

If so why?

I did a mk4 vr swap last fall, took 4 days.
I was even swapping a tiptronic car to manual as well.

It's REALLY EASY.
You only need to swap out 1/2 of the engine harness. You can leave the harness that runs by where the clutch master should be. you only need to swap the wires from the sub harness that connects in the rain tray.

You can use gasser fuel tank, just empty it. Some use the gas fuel pump without issue w/tdi.

You shoulda asked me, I told you I did it, when it was happening. I also have GOBS of mk4 wiring,

As long as neither is tiptronic, it's plug and play depending on what you are going to do.

both are auto... i would do a 5speed swap.. BUT tdi is auto and guy wants to keep auto for now... he fears 5 speed for what ever reason.. but knows when auto dies its 3k for new tranny (+labor) or 5 speed swap.. which costs less at that point... think its a wife needs to be able to drive it type of thing..

and nope forgot abt the swap you did... and changine tank easy.. why.. filler neck hole and have part.. if i lacked part then id just mod the gasser tank..

My 99.5 tdi 5sp 11mm pump had the fuel tank repaired prior in life, and was swapped/modded to work with a gasser tank. It's all logical.

You can take the engine out with radiator ect connected, it hangs fine by the hoses. disconnect ps lines at the rack, undo engine mounts, pull front end off. unplug wiring sub harness. and swap is reverse of removal.
I disconnected ac lines at the firewall.
I had no functionality issues with theses steps. Mk4 engine swaps are the EASIEST. except Immo.

You know about the immo, I swapped everything and made it simple. My cars were same color, so I swapped out all the locks too : )

I'd say $1500 ish per car, but these things have a tendency of getting messy, i usually just do them for myself/with friends.

The VR block I swapped into the 03 wolfsburg tiptronic 1.8t came from Bob Scoffield!
