i dont understand why i have allot of oil in my radiator and hoses?

The little rubber o-ring in the gasket around the head bolt that the oil is fed though deteriorates.. SInce the oil pressure is rather high on these it will both push out of the engine externally and usually over towards the coolant ports as well.. You may not see any major flaws in the gasket when this happens..  Once again, check around the head bolt holes VERY closely for cracks... Even a hairline crack in the bolt hole where the oil s fed can make a soupy mess in the coolant...

I have an '81, and it has 12mm head bolts.  Late '81 had 12mm.  All '82 AFAIK had 12mm.  Only the early '81 1.6 and 1.5L engines had 11mm.

Matt, where was your car built?   I've seen about 3 82's with 11mm bolts, all from the Pennsylvania plant.. I figured they had some leftover '81 engines to get rid of.. Never though to look at the '81's with 12mm to see where they came from..

so head gasket was a success!
truck runs and drives great now
so it seams
will see how much oil it eats.
antifreeze seems stable.
going to get some cleaner or raditor flush and get the oil out of the cooling system.

got a question
my glow plugs worked like i remember the light turning on and everthing
i disconected the wiring now it wont work.
i got the coolant temp and "oil light" wires hocked up the extra wire also to the coolant temp sensor
the front flang has 2 red wires i connected them, but what do the other ends connect to?

My car was built in Pennsylvania as well.  We purchased it in May/81.  I was a youngin' at the time, but since the car has been in my family since new, I know it has the original engine.  I've replaced the head gasket/rings/rod bearings, and I had to purchase new 12mm head bolts.  Yep, it's definitely an '81, definitely 12mm.

I just picked up a 2/82 build date Rabbit with an 11mm block and hex (11mm) bolts in head.  It even has 1.6 D on the block too...

My chassis number indicates I missed getting a 12mm by about 1000 cars... :(

I too have an '81 with 12mm head.

I buy 90% of my stuff from Autohausaz.com, great prices and free shipping on orders over $50, and who doesn't spend $50 on parts!?
Head Gasket, bolts, T-Belt and tensioner, water pump and then just run the crap out of it.

edit: totally just read the second page. Congrats on a running engine!

i already purchased a running mk2 engine out of a 92 jetta NA
and a mk1 turbo diesel engine out of a quantum, to bad all the engine mounts are sideways..
