Transmissions
« on: April 21, 2012, 02:39:19 am »
Earlier this year l posted a transmission problem, and we came to the conclusion that my reverse idler gear was shot.  At the time I said that in the spring I would be wondering which of the three transmissions (that I have) I should be using.  Well, now is that time.

the three are
1. a "AGS13036
4"  on a 1986/7/8 1.6 Turbo (that is the one that is broke, if necessary I will pull it apart and fix it) off a Jetta
2. a "ACH18105" on a 1.6 na it's also a 1986/7 but a golf
3. a "something," (that-I-don't-have-the-number-for-right-now) it is off of a 1986 1.6 na Jetta.

some my questions are
1. will the two Jetta's be the same?
and
2. which is the best one for a 1.6 turbo?

thanks in advance for any help.

ACH should be fine.  It works well on my 1.6NA
'91 Jetta 1.6 NA, '82 Caddy 1.6NA, '81 Cabriolet,  4 Mercedes OM616/617s , 2 Triumphs and a Citroen DS19 in a pear tree.

I would pick whatever has the tallest 5th gear if there's a difference. The turbo motors cruise so nicely on the interstate, mine will do 80 mph all day with no effort. I kind of worry that's a lot of RPMs for it but it will do it, I'm running an ACH trans. http://www.brokevw.com has the list of gear ratios.
