Tach not working on gas car with all diesel hardware.
« on: April 15, 2012, 08:02:23 pm »
Hey guys hope your having/had a nice weekend. Now I have tried to search my problem but I haven't found the answer I'm looking for. So I have a 90' Jetta that was a gas car and I recently swapped in a 1.6 N/A with the cluster from that same engine. The alternator charges good and has the W terminal on it so I'm not worried about that but is it because the car was a gas so some wiring is different that my tach's not working? Any advice or things I should check would be really help full. Thanks.

You need a tach cluster from a diesel
CE1 with 2 plugs or CE2 with 1 plug
I have a 91 Eco diesel
In USA they all had a clock no tach
In Canada 91 and 92 had tach
The diesel tach runs off the w terminal
A gas cluster has different electronics
A diesel cluster is plug and play with a diesel car
But you have a gas car
The wiring may be different
The tach runs off a wire on the coil

The w terminal runs 2 things
The tach
And the dynamic oil pressure system

I have a diesel cluster with a tach and I think its a ce2 with 1 connector (not sure if its ce1 or ce2 but it has one plug only). Could also explain why my oil light is flashing all the time.

The car was a gasser
The wiring is not going to be the same as a diesel - I expect
The tach won't be plug and play
90 should be CE2 which is 1 plug
The earlier CE1 was 2 plugs
If oil light flashes and buzzes it happens above 2,000 rpm
Test your oil pressure
When I first got my car running a month ago
It runs fine
Starts
Idles
Drives
As soon as I pulled onto the highway and exceeded 2k the buzzer went off
I checked pressure it was fine
Then found I had a white sender on the oil pressure tap in filter flange
It needs to be blank, slightly lower oil pressure for turbo diesel
Changed it
Hasn't gone off again in 400+ miles

Thanks for your reply. I do have a black oil switch for both but ill try new ones maybe that will hopefully fix it but the car does get very good oil pressure. Guess ill have to get some wiring diagrams and figure out where that W terminal goes.

when you swapped the cluster did you swap the harness too?

i'm just in the middle of swapping a gas auto with powersteering to diesel 5- speed with a manual rack, and when i swapped my cluster i made sure to rob the whole harness right to the fuse panel, i also robbed the harness from the tank to the fuse panel because the gas tank had a 3 pin plug wheres my diesel one had a 2 pin plug.

Ahh that I didn't do but now can I run a wire from the W terminal on the alternator to a connector on the cluster that will make it work?

Technically, yes
I dunno about the CE2 but in my CE1 the w signal wire goes to the fuse panel first and then internally jumpers to another pin, can't remember which one.  Im assuming this is for part of the dynamic oil pressure system

2 black sensors? I thought they were different.  Low pressure sensor in the head and high pressure at the oil filter flange

I just find it strange because I never had any temp. or oil light flashing in the car I took the engine out. Same with the TD I recently took out.

This should help you, Make sure you are looking at the "diesel only" tachometer signal in tracing your wiring.
