Black smoke - bad injector?
« on: April 17, 2012, 06:30:23 pm »
1v engine
1.6 turbo diesel, hydraulic head
Completely rebuilt with 450 miles on it
Giles - mild performance ip
Stock turbo injectors from parts place inc
Recently rebuilt K24 turbo
I set the ip as Giles told me
He recommended a K14 which will spool faster
I just bought one, yet to install
I don't rev it high at all
Driving around town I have 0 boost
If I lay on the power at all I get plenty of black smoke
Mild acceleration, mild smoke I can see in mirror
Push hard on the pedal - heavy black smoke
I just bought a set of injectors from Giles
I'm thinking that the parts place injectors are junk
Wouldn't be the first time
I used to buy a lot of parts from them but have had problem
I now use German auto parts
I trust anything I get from Giles
If theres black smoke I expect it's a bad injector
Or not enough boost?
Any input?
Also
I have the injectors that are coming off my car that someone may be able to take apart and fix
I'm sending another set to Giles for cores
Jon

You just did a rebuild? Internals? Rings, main and rod bearing etc ?

Its going to smoke, that's normal.  Especially any hard acceleration.  I can't say for sure how long it'll do this, its takes some time for the rings to seat and what not

I agree it's going to smoke, but...I have a vnt 17 an initial step hard on the pedal will blow lots of smoke until boost starts rising, and with this turbo it rises quickly.  Once boost rises the smoke pretty much clears up and any you go fast.  I don't know about the K14, I did have a t3 and it was similar, just didn't start boosting till about 2500 revs.  This VNT starts boosting much lower in rev range than the T3 did.

No boost is the problem
