OK, so where can you (cheaply, of course) find the accompanying thrust bearings for these?

good question. I will see if they have them. All that I have torn down have been well in spec to reuse the old.

if you google that part number, you will find other sites telling you to use XXX-XX-XXX part bumber thrust washers, then search that part number and you can find places that sell them

Don't know would have to call them, but I do know a total of 4 are needed. The part is probably listed incorrectly and come in 1 set of 2 and 2 sets are needed.

This is a bit of a hijack but the only thrust bearings i have ever seen listed are "standard"...are their undersized thrust bearings out there for a turned crank? Part numbers??

probably not, thats something you would need to discus with your crank grinder as typically on something like that, they would weld those spots and regrind the thrust area to spec while grinding the journal to the undersize of your choice

Fatmobile started a thread a while back and someone listed 026 198 421 as a set of all 4 thrust washers from the dealership. I Googled the set and they come up as for a 98 Bettle. They also have the shorter legs that don't taper and overlap.
Not 100% sure if these would work but if the axial play is the same between a Beetle and a 1.6d, it's roughly half the price of World Impex.
What's odd is when I ran my 81 Rabbit at AutohausAZ, the main bearing set w/o the integrated thrust washers was not shown as an option. Best Price showed them as an option along with the sets with integrated thrust washers.

Yeah that was the deal, autohaus did not show them as an option for our cars, but that doesn't mean it wasn't there. They are there and that is what the link is for. The thrust washers I haven't found on autohaus yet, but I haven't called either.

I called Collin @ Techtonics to follow up on a race header question and I brought this subject up. They sell the Glyco bearings with the separate thrust washers. The listing doesnt show diesels listed, but they fit, just fine.
A set includes 6 grooved, 4 smooth and the 4 thrust washers. The set is $60. He believes they're German, and the bearings sport the VW logo. They also sell a set for .25mm undersized cranks, for $70.
He told me that the only time that he'd consider using the 2 piece thrust bearings would be if you have an early engine up to 79. He thinks that's the cut off when they started having the tab recesses in the saddles and caps.
As a fyi, I mentioned my washed out crank and he told me that any 1.8 crank has the same journal sizing. It'd be a few lbs lighter and the only downside would be that it may not be able to absorb all of the diesel engine's vibrations as well. He didn't think there would be a strength issue.
