6 speed
« on: March 27, 2012, 10:41:33 pm »
For those of you with the money, I was reading at performance VW about a shop in europe that sells a kit to put an extra gear, a sixth on the 02A transmission.  It looks like the parts are $1500 or so.  http://www.eurotuning.cz/

Woah, that's some kung-fu stuff right there.  But what ratio are they?  Too rich for my blood whatever the ratio.  At least another answer to the question 'how do I get a 6 speed into a MK1?' is proposed, even if I don't necessarily think those light cars necessarily need the extra gear . . .

Good thing we have a fat amount of torque down low.  If they continue to raise the top gears and lower the engine RPM's we will be idling down the road at 60.  I wonder if that is what they have in mind.

I heard an ad on the radio for an eight speed tranny in some newer car for sale.  Sad thing was they were all excited that this tranny gave them an incredible 31 miles per gallon.  Might have to try one in an MK2.

TDIs came with a variety of 6 spd.. may have been the later ones tho.

and i KNOW a BUNCH of gassers had 6 spds..

so there for, a 6spd MUST bolt to a diesel..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Yup. I have a 6-speed from ALH Beetle in the garage. It'll bolt to the engine just fine but getting it to work in an early car is another thing.

That's the 02M trans you're talking about.  They are physically shorter than 5-spd 020/02A/02Js because they actually use 2 output shafts, one for 1/2 and 3/4, the other for 5/6 and reverse.  They do have the right bell housings to use on the older motors, but fabbing the shift/clutch mechanisms and the mounts are the limiting factor here.  I didn't even consider the speedo cable either.  Plus if you want to take the housing off you need 6 hands, or 2 friends and 6 beers.  :P
That's why so many folks choose the 02A.  The mounts are already available from aftermarket custom/race sites, and there's a kit for making the rod shift linkage work on the cable shift trans.  The clutch and speedometer cables can be assembled from stock parts from other VW models as well.  Tear-down is simpler as you don't need to be Spiderman to lift the housing.  Add this 6 speed conversion and you have a complete bolt-in solution for even the earliest swallowtail.  Just don't look at the price tag when you're done.   :o ;)

well doing a 6 speed conversion i sless them buying a 6 speed.. having custom axles built to mate them to a older car so on.. so really its a cheaper option IMO then to buy a 02m..

You are correct.  Still a bit of money though.

And IIRC 02ms have 100mms on some units, 108 on others.   I don't remember if the diff width flange-to-flange is the same, but if so you could still use 16v rocco axles.  This is one of those time I wish I knew where a euro salvage part yard was; would be great to take some pics.

Www.boraparts.com is very close to releasing a 6th gear addon for O2J
1985 jetta TD. It was free, and it shows. Down and dirty engine refresh made it run fairly well.... No leaks, except water into the cabin!

2001 golf Tdi. Heavy built ALH, soon to have a PD Frankenstein motor.
