AAZ into Mk 1
« on: October 03, 2008, 09:18:09 pm »
Anyone put an AAZ into a Mk 1 chassis? What did you do for a timing cover. I am putting an AAZ into my mk 1, the stock AAZ cover is missing except for the metal back that bolts to the sides of the head. This motor has the two piece timing sprocket for the IP. I was going to cut pump mount section off the Mk 1 bracket and just bolt the rest to the block for the passenger side engine mounting. I don't think a stock AAZ cover set will work for this. Maybe modify the stock Rabbit timing cover? Any thoughts anybody?

THANKS

I'm in the process of putting a AAZ into a MK1. I modified the AAZ backing plate to work with the stock mk1 motor mount. I haven't done the outter plastic piece yet

Yeah I was looking at it did you remove some material from the metal section so the mount bracket could go over it? does yours have the adjustable IP sprocket or will you be using the whole A1 engine/pump mounting bracket?

I'm using a modified 1.6 pump, so it does not have the split pulley.

You would have to cut the mk1 motor mount, and use the 1.9 pump mounting bracket because the holes in the brackets are different diameters. The other option would be to use the mk1 gas motor mount with the AAZ pump bracket

I tried lining up the MK1 timing cover, and the pump pulley would have hit it

Hey everyone I am about to complete the above step of modifying the AAZ plastic and metal covers to fit a MK1 diesel passenger side bracket.... I will post some pictures of my 4 year project car....

I want to try something different with the shift brackets that are bolted to the trans-axle facing the battery. Instead of using the 2 x MK1 brackets, I wanted to use a MK3 aluminium bracket and bolt that to the trans axle.

Do you think there will be fitment issues? Will it line up with the existing mk1 shift selector rod?

Note: I will need to cut the existing MK3 bracket to get this done as it acts as en engine mount and a shift linkage bracket....

the trans/linkage... WTF are you talking about? nothing changes. the trans stays the same, and in the same place. why do you need different brackets to install original pieces on an original trans and an original car?

the ENGINE is different, but the only difference is that its 16mm taller. that has nothing to do with the trans, shifter, or linkages..

use the SEARCH function if you are not sure about something.. there have been THOUSANDS of AAZ mk1 swaps documented over the years..

LOL. ROR You need to stop hanging out on vortex.

It sounds like he wants to upgrade the mk1 shifter pieces that bolt to the tranny to the ones that are found on a mk3. I've never done it but it should probably have it's own thread.

Near as I remember we used all the 1.6 junk on mine, just had to hack on the plastic cover some.  It's been a few years.

what does a mk2/3 trans mount do that a valve guide in a mk1 piece will not do?

the mk2/3 parts get just as sloppy..

Hello everyone,

Well it's been a little while since my last post but finally the AAZ is in the MK1 Jetta.
No modification of the passenger frame rail either.....

Ultimately I sourced the parts I needed and actually found the shift bracket that was holding me up but I have run into a slight snag.

I installed my brake lines in ahead of time, and the two main lines that run for the rears are in the way of the linkage....  Does anyone have a good picture of the lines that run to the two rear brakes?

Also my shift linkage seems to be short ( I have the 5spd shift linkage for a MK1) and everything seems to be correctly installed but the  "Rod" that runs between the relay shaft and the selector shaft seems too short.

Possibly the shift rod bearing holder needs to be move closer toward the driver side or I need to check make sure my engine is properly aligned.

What do you guys think?
