Do you know what year they started to show up on alternators?

1997, to the best of my knowledge. Maybe the ALH TDI's don't use it? It's hard to tell the difference, the only visual clue is that the clutch type has a plastic cover over the end. If you remove the plastic cover you can see the spline drive where the special tool fits for removal.

yeah, wyldman showed me what the pulley looked like, I will check around for a 1997 one.
