354 perkins in my truck running like crap
« on: January 20, 2012, 05:40:24 am »
Got an intermittent noise I don't like in the motor, a metallic "clang"  and a bad miss. Smokes way too much too. First thought  wa I broke a rocker or a push rod. Had the valve cover off, everything is going up and down like it's supposed to. Tried cranking injector lines loose to pick the cylinder, and one will make it stall. Any bright ideas?
Next step is to pull teh injectors this weekend and have them tested.... :(

0 psi on #1 cylinder.... the rest are only about 250. Engine is supposed to be 16 to 1, book says new is 430 psi.

No prechamber, they're direct. Did a complete rebuild on this before it went in the truck in 1998. Dry sleeve engine. Did sleeves, pistons, rings, all bearings including cam and rebushing rods, head had 12 valves, valve guides, seats, etc.
I'm hoping that I've just got a valve that eroded far enough into the block that it's not closing (pushrod engine). Don't think I'll get that lucky though.  Anyone want a project truck? ;D

Not just an eroded valve.... there's still clearance between the valves and the rockers.

Just bought an F250 with a 7.3 to replace it. Won't have quite the same mileage or cool factor, but it will have to do.

Anyone got a good 354 perkins and want a project?

Too many years, too manyy miles...

It should be worth something to someone. It's a complete conversion kit to put a perkins in a 3/4 ton chev/GMC.  Easy way to do it would be to lift the cab off, drop in a new engine, put a better cab on the truck.  Chassis is all there, brakesdone recently, all the front suspension should pass, etc. Fresh clutch, starter, etc. the list goes on. I don't have the time/ambition anymore. Besides, I rebuilt this in '98 and drove it in another truck before that for probably 3 or 4 years.  I'm due for a change.

Oh man, that would be a sweet project, I'd be interested if it weren't so far away!

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D
