Idling high
« on: January 18, 2012, 08:24:41 pm »
A friend of mine is getting a NA motor from an 84 Rabbit going to power a hydraulic pump. It had been sitting for several years but the pump still had fuel in it. It fired up easily but is idling quite high. I figure something might be gummed up in the pump. Is there any good way to clean the pump out? I was going to recommend he put a can of diesel purge through it but does anyone else have any other ideas or might the pump have to be taken apart?

The idle could just be set a little high no? 84 rabbit, i cant think if those pumps had an idle booster on the backside that was activated with the cold start lever.

get it running and let it warm up for a few minutes. Take both fuel lines off and run them both in to a fresh gallon of Auto tranny fluid. run it on that for 10 minutes, shut it down and let it sit for an hour or two, then start it up and finish the bottle. switch back to diesel.

little cheaper than diesel purge, and probably does a better job of actually cleaning.

Any pump sitting for that long needs purge or ATF or just good fuel run through it before any tweaking gets done.  Put the wrenches away and get some tubing and a bottle and go to work on it.

My thoughts.

He finally got around to getting a spare pump I gave him put on it and it works great. He put a new timing belt on too as a precaution once it was working ok.
