88 they killed it... no more o2 light...

i cannot say ive seen a pre 88 mk2 gasser golf in so long... jetta had the box... but for the life of me golf.. no idea.. but i am assuming they did.. think the clusters same as jetta even though the dash is 100% different in how the trim and all is.. aka surround that hold the switches and all is not the same as a jetta.. me allowed the 3 year brain fade.. i hate mk2.. LOL..

the old golfs most definitely had the box. both my 85 GTI and 86 Golf have both had the box.

and idk what your talking about, with the mk2 dash.. all my mk2 golfs and jettas have all had the same style of dash. the only difference, is the place of origin, and the years of the cars.. the early cars had a tray on each side of the center console.. the later cars had a knee bar that took up a BUNCH of room for no appearant reason..

westy golf.. 85-88ish had a completly different dash then say a jetta.. in 88 when moved to mexico for it all they went to ce2 and same dash..

the heater controls.. the facia for the radio the headlight switch area and the center 6 switch area are 100% different

westy that stuff is either bonded or screwed into teh dash.. jetta its all part of the plastic the radio and all sits in.. so you cannot mix match the dash to the facia..

the easy way to tell is the 6 switch place.. if its part of the same plastic as what holds the radio then its a non westy dash.. if its 2 different pieces of plastic (westy is bonded to dash) then its a westy dash...

You can still grind the head off the bolt. Pull your speedo cable and gear out. Then pull the trans and get to it with head and vice grips/extractor/drill and retap.

most of my cars have a countersunk head philips screw holding the speedo cable in the trans.. quite hard to grind the head off since its recessed into the hold down..

All of mine have a regular hex head cap screw in them. If it is counter sunk then I would drill it with the appropriate drill bit size. Then pull cable and gear. Then trans and drill and tap or heat and turn.

Replacment trans has been drilled and tapped for 8-1.25 bolt 10 mm long.

Dremel is my friend, hold down tab will soon be a bit lighter.

Dremel is my friend, hold down tab will soon be a bit lighter.

theres no reason to re-tap that trans.. i just change the bolt.. theres plenty of those bolts on VWs and toyotas..

Never could find a 7-1.25 x 10 mm bolt...............so drilled and tap for 8-1.25x12mm, used an 8mm flat and lock washer.  Much better for to remove.

And we are done.
