FDNYGuy  not only is Superior a big lake it is a cold one.  I don't think I ever got more than knee deep in it before my feet were so frozen I had to get out.

And I agree that you are giving it an effort as you can.  I didn't start with an engine overhaul right out of the gate.  It was more like a plug change and oil change on the lawn mower.

Hope you are enjoying the trip and the car pulls it all the way without incident.

They don't force us, they let us choose to do it.  And we choose mileage over safety or speed.  We could choose to have a newer heavier car with a bigger horsepowered engine in it but we don't think that is necessary.  Especially when we know how to convert them over to turbos or tweak them for more power for their weight.

Most consumers are not capable of such things.  We are an elite group! So drive that old beater into the ground and then go buy a 92.

Wtf are you talking about? Check it- http://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/2010-volkswagen-polo-bluemotion-diesel-quick-spin

More interior room and power than a mkI golf and 71 combined mpg.

I here ya, but they have airbags and ***. I've got kids so the wife drives a 2010 wrx not great fuel economy but a hell of a lot of fun and we don't put too many miles on it. With the preponderance of drivers in my area having there heads shoved up their arses trying to get signal on their iphones the kids are not riding in the truck with me anytime soon. Additionally when fuel hits $5-6/gallon that $22,000 will amortize pretty rapidly with an additional 30mpg or so.

yes but i won't be poor forever.. no sooner than i'm done with this engineering degree i'm going to want a shiny new diesel.. and i'd like options. or at least i would have liked options all along so that the junkyard in Virginia is not GASOLINE ONLY. maybe a rare VW, but .. no chevy aveo's and ford escort's in a diesel version to pick from. its ridiculous.
it's our government scratchin General Electric's back by forcing the hybrid idea down our throats so the battery maker and the electric motor maker are turnin profit. diesel is clearly the answer; here in Holland diesel is considerably cheaper than gas (yeah really) and most people drive diesel cars. haven't seen the first prius (GASP)

we should import these SEAT ibiza's and such with the diesel engines.. fix them up, sell them for $$$. late 90's model diesel, great gas mileage.. rare. just don't break it  :)

The airbags are something I would like to have. People in Florida dont drive, they kinda direct their car whilst doing a myriad of other things. Most any other option now a days can be augmented from after market stuff. But, all I really need is a decent tune set up, the road, (and of course) AC.

I drive it cause its raw. Cause I feel like part of the car when I'm driving it. It reminds me of that freedom you felt when you first got your license. The simplicity of the machine also allows for me to be able to diagnose most any problem AND fix it. New cars appear to be designed in a manner nowadays that encourages you to take it to the dealer, and repair costs retail are astronomical.

I have repaired and upgraded various things with this car, to include the price I paid for it and a transmission swap, for less than an engine replacement on any modern car.

I think the difference is that for most, cars are an appliance. No different then a washing machine. Options are like exrtra spin cycles and do dads.

We however, are drivers.

Well, I didn't go in it, so I will take your word for it. But I did have to go across to the American side of Sault Ste. Marie to get diesel for my 02 F-250 (at the time, diesel was over $4 on the Canadian side, was $2.94 on the American). I loved the TCH. I will travel that one year from East to West, with a Pacific Coast Highway bonus.

Stay safe, stay well. Jimmy.

I seriously feel bad for the people that can't even manage their own oil change.. I still feel nominally bad for people that have the pay for their suspension, brake, and drive-train work as well :( Oh how great it is to be competent :D lol

I can do all that...im to the point of being too lazy and take it to the dealer and say do it because i couldnt be bothered to crawl on the ground lol

Man don't you have one of those electric creepers that have that fluffy pillow, massage and cup holder on it?  We are all getting them for Christmas.  Santa promised when I talked to him at the mall last week.
