Speedo Issue
« on: December 13, 2011, 09:11:57 pm »
I have an 86 Golf with a 1.6L N/A. When I go the car the speedometer didn't work. So I discovered the cable was broken down near the tranny (5spd).

So I swapped out the entire speedo cable with one from a 92 Jetta with a Gas engine. I looked at the gears of each cable prior to putting the Gasser Cable in place of the Diesel one. They appeared to me to be the same size and tooth count just different colors. Mine original one was a dirty white color and the one from the gasser was red.

Now the speedometer at least works but it reads only about half the speed of what I believe I am actually traveling. It reads only about 30mph when I believe I am actually going about 60mph.

Now the question is, Is the cable bad or have the wrong gear on the end or is the speedometer bad?

Thanks, VW

white is gear you need.. and 1/2 off on milage.. nope.. no way.. id think your speedo is screwed up breaking cables.. you should not have been able to fit the red gear by the way.. th enipple on bottom is wrong sized to put the wrong on in.. red is bigger...

why different gear... different ring/pinion size..

OK, hmm.. can I swap the gears from the one cable to the other? I don't think I am going to find another one with the same white gear?? I plan to swap out the cluster here today actually for one with a tach instead of a Clock. I appreciate the help, this forum is the best  :D

what does the cluster say? on the face, it should have a small 1570, or something like that, down by where it says MPH.

what trans code do you have? being from a 92 gasser, i would guess its an AUG trans..

being a mk2, it should have 3.67 gears, and take a RED speedo drive gear..

3.89/3.94 gears take the WHITE drive gear..
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Not sure what the tranny code was from the gasser tranny but my Golf's is ACH. I will attempt to pull out he remaining cable from my gear and see if I can swap them that way. My cluster does say 1540 by the way. Thanks for all the help.

well if you shoved red gear in white gear tranny... like i said nipple bigger at bottom.. it would have not liked its too tight a fit and would have caused issues.. i usually cannot bolt the cable in place when wrong one used.. sticks up too far..

note.. white one fits in red tranny.. but wipes out as it wobbles on the pinion too much after a few days..
