Update time. I found an AUG with about 60K, installed the .71, new seals. It's back together, drives ok. I have a couple of questions. What do you guys think would be the most seal friendly stuff to add to the trans to flush it? And what trans fluid would help the slight gear/syncro grind in the 1-2 shift? Probably not, but I still need to clean the gunk out.

Too bad you did not clean the gunk prior to installation. However, any rubber safe flushing agent shouldn't harm the seals.

A GL-4 transmission fluid should suffice for your needs.

It isn't approved by VW but I have used GM synchromesh cut with 75w-90 GL-4 oil and haven't had any gear crunch. best way to flush I have found is to get it hot and drain it.

Synchromesh is what I use when I do a tranny fluid change. I've never mixed it though

Tyler, have you had any issues with using STRAIGHT syncromesh fluid? my cars are all due for a trans service, and ive been debating what oil to use..

my 86 has a bit of a crunch into 2nd gear when its cold, and you shift it too fast.. and 1st is a bit hard to find sometimes also.

I have mixed a quart and 4oz of royal purple to 1 quart syncromesh or I have done a true 50/50 of 1quart 2oz each. I have also ran the mobil 1 that was GL-4 rated with a little bit of syncromesh with no ill effects.
I know the rans parts will be fine with syncromesh the only thing that I am kinda weirded out about is the ring and pinion gears. Syncromesh is a trans fluid not a gear lube. They should be real close to the same thing, but there might not be as much cushion in for the final gears in our trans....but I have ran these oil combos for around 40,000-50,000 miles most in my jetta, and probably 20,000 in my other VW's with no issues so I am not worried anymore. Brokevw wouldn't recommend an oil other than 75w-90 GL-4 rated...no brands other than the VW brand is what he said. I told him what I planned on running he said he wouldn't endorse it, but I would be fine as many do it. Probably more of a CYA move than anything on his part as it is his name on the build.

I never had any problems, but I never kept those boxes for long enough to say. I wasn't wowed by an improvement over what was in there, but worn syncros are worn syncros and a fluid isn't going to magically fix that.

I just tried the Syncromesh, 1qt+.6qt of GL-4 spec. No big deal in my case. If I slow down the shift 1/2 a sec, it's gone anyway.
Wasn't there something out there about the way to get the level in the tranny right was to drive front left wheel on a 3/4" piece of plywood (or was it a 2x4?) to get the more correct fluid level? Anybody heard of this and which one was it?
