mk2 cluster in a mk1?
«

I have a mk2 diesel cluster, one including a tach.
Alt has a w-terminal, trans is setup for a later style speedo cable.
Would this one just drop in?

It's been a while and my memory not that great but as I remember a mkI cluster has 2 connectors while a mkII cluster has 1 so you can't just plug one into the other. You have to swap guts.

Depends on if the car is Central Electrics 1 or 2.
CE1 has two plugs and CE2 as one. CE2 wiring started in MK2's around mid '88 (depending on build location, some didn't convert till late '89).

well... what mk1?
for a westy.. rabbit/caddy a ce1 style can be made to fit via custom brackets.. have to build your own plugs, mod the steering column brace.. the 2nd plug will not fit with no mods.. also brake light/seat belt light non existant.. i used shift light for brake light ont he one i did..
for a jetta/cabby... no room for 2nd plug.. would have to cut off column support and build something custom..
now what i ended up doing when i took my cluster set up to fit a jetta... was lots of fab work to install it into the mk1 cluster.. gas tach one so no screw clock segment.. then i found a old non shift light set up.. 80-81 only.. added a boost gauge to it even..

Looks like I'm just going to swap parts between them.
I have 3-4 clusters here, one diesel with tach (factory?) from a mk2 jetta (92)
The ends on the speedo cables are different. On has a square peg, the other a small gear. The one pulled from this trns has a small gear, my mk1 trans has the peg. End of the cables are different also, I believe

my 92 cluster fit in my 81 rabbit no problem.. wiring was not a direct swap.
