Need help- 1.6TD cooling hose NLA - alternate hose ?
« on: October 25, 2011, 02:13:45 am »
Hi Guys.
I finishing a 88 Fox wagon build.
It has a 1.6TD from an 85 quantum installed.
I went to the local VW dealer,to replace the old "T" hoses which feed and return from
factory oil cooler- to find out they are NLA discontinued.
Part #'s are : 068 121 053 AG   and 321 121 109 F
One hose goes from water pump to cyl upper hose flange and "T" 's off to oil cooler
other hose goes from water pump to heater pipe ? and "T" 's off to oil cooler.
I have replaced ALL other hoses and would like to find NEW hoses to replace these.
Maybe hoses from a transverse application are close and will fit ?
Seeing as a fox wasn't equipped with a diesel- modification is expected- But something close would be great !
I'm open to your suggestions !
Thanks,Mike

Get the front, in your case may be side (not sure which way engine is mounted in fox), coolant fitting from a AAZ.  The small hose that runs to the reservoir comes off of this coolant fitting in MK3 cars.  you can just use a regular hose to the rad and a small hose from the fitting to the reservoir.

I had a aluminum fitting in my 1.6td, I just drilled and tapped it for a 1/4 NPT and have had no problems with it.  I was not going to pay $250 CAD for that hose!
99' 1.9 1Z Tdi, hybrid pump -1.9 housing & rover internals, 2052 wastegate turbo,.25 hflox nozzles, SDI intake, CTN tranny
96' 1.6 TD Golf, Giles pump, VNT 17, Gas changed to Diesel, Air to Water Int.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for your replies !
I may end up making these hoses as well- Haven't decided yet.
$ 88 for one hose is pretty steep - and it's a VW sub part # (as per VW dealer)
But then agian, the original is 25 years old and not too bad-so if I get another 25 years-might be worth it.
Here is what my hoses look like:

Anyone think of anything else I may be able to use ?

Thanks,Mike

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all your help and input, with these hoses.
I've decided to fabricate metal "T" fittings, for both of these hoses,
so I can use easy to find non turbo hoses and standard 5/8" heater hose.
My decesion is based on future availability of hoses.
I'm building a daily driver and prefer to use parts that can be easily found,
in the event of a breakdown, ect.
The last thing I want,is to have the car sitting around for weeks, while I try and locate
new hoses. This way,all the parts are easy to aquire.
I have already fabricated a 5/8" 3 way "T" for the oil cooler return hose and
a 1" X 1" X 5/8"  "T" for the bypass hose,to feed the oil cooler ( used a 1" threaded pipe-
3" long and drilled and tapped a hole in the center for 3/8" pipe, where I installed a 3/8"
Pipe X 5/8" hose barb and used JB weld on threads for sealant) Looks like it will do the trick.
Agian,thanks for your input !
Mike

Hey Gee-Bee,
I did check your ebay store,as I have bought from you before.
Didn't find anything to fit the Quantum 1.6TD or the Fox
The longitudinal setups seem to use different hoses- the oil cooler is clocked differently, due to interference with the D/S engine mount / clutch cable mount.
If you do make these hoses, let me know.
sent you a PM
Thanks,Mike
