steel wheels that fit over g60 brakes
« on: October 13, 2011, 11:34:44 pm »
I am searching for steel wheels that I can get for a decent price before winter hits.  I know I should have been buying earlier but money wouldn't allow it.

I grabbed a saturn 15x6 wheel from the JY, everything else were the correct sizes but it wouldn't clear the caliper, so the offset/backspacing sizes were wrong.

Now I have been looking at BMW/Mini Cooper wheels.  Tirerack has steelies for 47/ea.   I also found that www.discounttire.com recommends Unique model 83 wheels as a steel wheel for the mini.  I wonder if anyone has tried this to see if they work, or has tried mini cooper wheels on their mk1?

Corrado Steel wheels measurements
Mfg Part Number: 357601025M
Diameter: 15
Width: 6
Bolt Pattern: 4x100
Center bore: 57.1mm
Offset: 35mm
Backspacing?

Unique 83
Mfg Part Number: 1526247017B
Diameter: 15
Width: 6
Bolt Pattern: 4x100
Center bore: 72mm
Offset: 41mm
Backspacing: 5.125"

It comes down to the backspacing.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Offset and width determine the backspacing so you could calculate it but in any case you'll need hubcentric rings if you run the tirerack wheels and you could get 6mm spacers and end up with the same offset as the corrado wheels.

Not too concerned with 6mm of offset.  my fenders are already rolled fitting 16x7's under them.

I calculated backspacing on the corrado wheel to be ~4.63"  using 0.25" for rim lip

It seems when I solve

Centerline + Offset + Rim Lip = Backspacing

for rim lip on the unique wheel they use .515"

using rim lip size from the unique wheel, I find the corrado backspacing to be 4.895

That is a difference of 5.125-4.895=0.23"   which is the 6mm difference in offset.

I believe the wheels I am running right now, have 38mm offset and 16x7.  Switching to the unique wheel would provide more inner and outer clearance.

I am just afraid of ordering stuff getting it, it not working, me shipping it back.   Costing me 25-50 bucks in shipping charges.

I've known of 14" wheels that fit over 12" brakes, although with spacers.

I would be very surprised if there were a 15" wheel that doesn't fit over an 11" caliper. Girling 54's aren't a large caliper either anyway. The only thing I could imagine would be the caliper hitting the inside of the spoke, but particularly with a steel wheel with no dish and running spacers, that's very highly unlikely.

enough boost is when you have 3 dimple marks in the hood from the valve cover nuts..  ;D

buy some corrado steelies for corrado brakes.  Or some corrado sebrings,  or just buy some small spacers for the saturn steels.

The thing I am trying to avoid is paying more than $50/wheel including shipping (if applicable)

Local wheels I wouldn't want to pay more than $30/wheel

I understand Mini Cooper wheels are similar sizes, and Unique Wheels model 83 can be found for $50/ea shipped.  I am going to take a wheel off this weekend and measure some things, call Unique wheels and see if they can tell me if their model 83 will work or not.

I mean, here, alloys are 100/set at the junk yard. wheels do a lot for you, cheaper isnt necessarily better.

i will not buy anything from them ***s.. i wanted to buy a 12$ shiftknob/boot from them... they wanted 25 in shipping.. im like ill pick it up.. tolls/fuel cost less.. they like no you cannot.. im like f you...

also... back spacing = offset... aka et... with the higher # aka 41 vs 35 the wheel will be 6mm closer to the strut housing.. with roddo brakes.. i think you will have issues.. BUT a 6mm spacer will put it back at 35 and issue resolved..

Kevin, I think you meant 15" not 16" Corrado steelies.

I have these on my GTD with dual piston calipers and 11" brakes. They can be had at the dealer for about $65 each. the dealer wont charge you shipping if you go over there and pick them up.

Thanks for the idea.  I should check them.  Here in Illinois they like the 8.75% sales tax.  So even I do save on shipping, the cost is translated into taxes.

The current wheels I have on the car are 16x7 41mm offset

I think I will just go with the raddo steelies since I know they will fit, and don't need hub centric rings..

If it makes you feel better, here in Seattle, sales tax is 9.5% :P One note on the steelies, if you use dual piston calipers (mine are referred to as Girling 60, and come on early Audi turbo cars and Audi 90 20v quattros) do not have them balance inside the 'spokes' as the weights will hit the calipers. I did not know this and painted my calipers, then installed the wheels... and then painted the calipers again because the wieghts hit the calipers. It is a tight fitment with those calipers. Corrado G60 calipers should not have that problem...
