Rad fan stopped working after extending cranking
« on: October 19, 2011, 05:34:15 pm »
I ran out of fuel and had to crank the starter a lot to get going again. Not long after, I noticed the temp gauge starting to climb while stuck in traffic. Pulled over and noticed the radiator fan is not spinning. I turned the AC on which normally turns on the rad fans on but they did not go on. It was getting dark and I was not able to work on it. Furthermore I do not have the Bentley with me. >:(

Is there a rad fan fuse and where is it on a 92 Ecodiesel? There is a strip fuse on the firewall with white/red wires that is not burned out but there is no voltage to it. Is that for the rad fan? How about relays? Does the power for the fans make a stop at the starter first? If someone can post a wiring diagram that'd help tremendously.

firewall = glowplug fuse..

relay on fan shroud = fan relay..

30 amp fuse in fuse box = fan fuse.. usually closest one to clutch..

I found a wire diag from Bentley site. It shows a 50A rad fan fuse s42 which feeds the rad fan relays but does not show location. Fuse block fuses only go up to 30A is that right, so the 50 amp fuse has to be elsewhere?

The strip fuse on the firewall is 50 Amps.

The realy for the fan is near the battery mounted to the fan shroud. The B+ wire often corrodes there and the rad fan will stop working

Thanks for the link Jerry. I forgot about what I did (which was not very extensive) when I worked on that relay 111 back when I had the dead battery problem. I just went through the whole rad fan circuit, cleaned and tested every connection and made sure all 3 speeds work.

Relay 111 (2nd speed in the diag) is the medium speed , Relay 98 is the high speed fan (3rd speed in the diag). Both relays are on the fire wall. The 50 amp fuse is on relay 111's block and was blown. Since I didn't have a replacement fuse, I hammered flat a piece of plumber's solder and made a temporary fuse. It works fine and if it continue to work fine, it willl become a permanant fuse. ;D

The AC relay (@ fuse relay panel with 8 pins) stopped working, that's why turning the AC on didn't turn the fans on (low speed) anymore. I took the relay cover off, resoldered the PC board and it works again.  ;D

I will be hooking up a switch to manually turn the rad fan on high speed, it's easy to do by connecting relay 98's coil wire (small red blk wire) to +12v.

Not totally true for Ecodiesels.

The lone strip fuse on the firewall next to the coolant bottle= glow plugs

Relays 111 and 98 on firewall = fan relays medium speed and high speed

50 amp strip fuse on relay 111's block = fan fuse
