I've been thinking of building a 3 speed for my aaz but I've heard the starter won't clear the block, has anyone ever tried this?

i know i have posted that it wouldn't fit before, but it can and it has been done, i think it just depends on the starter, but there are definitely aba swapped cars with the 3 speed automatic and if it fits with an aba then it will fit an aaz since they are both the newer block, u might just have to go through a couple starters
The diesel starter will not fit. I ground a lot of my block away trying to get it to fit but no chance. I also had to grind most of the turbo oil return bung away but it still wouldn't go. You will need to use a gas starter. I suspect with the exception of winter you will be fine.
I was going to use a gas starter as it's thinner and I'm not planning on driving it I the winter anyways. I'm starting to think I might be screwed though as my turbo is flipped upside down. Do you mean it hit the oil return banjo?

I was using the diesel starter and it was hitting the oil return boss that is cast into the block.
The gas starter is a lot shorter so that won't be an issue.
I think you'll do fine with a healthy starter and warm temperatures. Synthetic oil might help, and a block heater might even be necessary but I wouldn't think so unless you are near the end of the season.
Yeah this car won't see cold days and will have gold synthetic so I'm not to worried about the gas starter being able to spin it. I am worried about the solenoid hitting my turbo since the manifold if flipped. I wonder if I can rotate the starter so the solenoid I'd on the bottom. I'm picking up the trans and starter tomorrow so I'll find out soon what I'm dealing with
