Hello there everybody.  Finally got registered over here.  I have been lurking for a while gathering info.  I currently have a 1988 Suzuki Samurai with a 1.6NA in it.  I am rebuilding a1.6TD from an 85 Jetta this winter and will be dropping that in this spring.  Performance has been great with this mod.  I jsut had it to the offroad park this past weekend for the first time and love the low end torque.  Currently I am running about 7" of lift and 31" tires over a stock Zuk.

The install was quite simple really.   www.acmeadapters.com has all the info needed for this swap.  Basically what Jeff from Acme does is he machines the Zuk flywheel to bolt onto the VW engine.  There is an adapter plate that is machined to bolt the stock Zuk 5 speed to the VW engine and you are off.  I have the stock Zuk tach working through an adapter from Dakota Digital.  It is picking up the stator output signal from a Delco CS-130 105Amp alternator and running on the stock guage cluster.  The stock Zuk cluster was modified so that the "Check Engine" light is now used as the glow plug indicator.  Performance wise I love it.  The low end torque is great compared to the stock 1.3L gasser that comes in a samurai.  Once I get the TD installed I will probably upsize to a 32" tire to help pull my highway RPMs down a little bit.  I a m cruising at about 3K rpm at about 58mph right now.  Not too bad but I would like to pull it down a little.

I am actually running a dual fuel tank system......I have a 12gallon poly tank in the rear.  From there I use an electric pump and filter on the frame rail to fill that tank under the hood.  Once that tank is full it overflows to the rear tank.  The IP pulls from the bottom rear of the small tank...through the VW filter/water seperator (near the battery) and then to the IP.....the IP returns to the top of the small tank.  Thought process behind this is that if the rear tank gets low and I am on a side hill or extreme angle and the fuel pickup comes out of the fuel for a while I will still be drawing from the "reserve" in that small tank and not starving my IP.

Nice rig.  I like seeing how it actually goes in the engine compartment.  I've wanted to put a 1.6D in my subaru for quite a while, but its engine compartment is designed for a flat four, so it's a bit harder.....

That's a great idea!  I'm about to put a 1.9L TD in my 94 PONTI-YAK SUNRUNNER. Can't wait to throw this useless gas engine into the lake.

The only other change that I have made since that pic was taken is I have removed the timing belt cover to allow better airflow over the block instead of having it deflected around the block by the cover.  I also upgraded from the 40mm hub water pump to a 30mm pump with a smaller pulley so it circulates the coolant a little better.

i'd probably keep that cover in place. Especially what with offroading. The minimal amount of cooling improvement won't make any difference. Get a twig or rock in there, and it's all over.

If I end up tubing out the front clip it will definately go back on.....for now things are pretty well protected by the rad and skid paltes.

I'll add to zippys Samurai post a little. I did similar to what he did except I used the 1.9 TD.

I dont know where you guys are finding decent samurai's for these projects, the only kind I have EVER seen in person were complete rust buckets!  :P

Dr. D, I've thought about that as well with the Geo\Chev Tracker\Vitara\sidekick whatever else they are called- do you plan on running a lift kit on it?  Trying to decide between one of those (cost effective) or getting a Wrangler and putting a 4BT in it.  (high dollar)

Nice Sami's you guys got there.  :)

Mine isn't quite so rust free...I just polished a turd.  The plan was to get the chassis built up and get the bugs worked out then find a good body to swap onto the chassis once I get my garage built.
