manual transmission cover plate (lever plate & Housing)
« on: September 04, 2011, 11:18:53 pm »
Has anyone ever seen a part number stamped on the cover plate. I have a picture in this note.

Or can you tell from the picture of two (2) cover plates, which one is 4 speed and which is 5 speed? Notice that the "ramp" on the top one is 1/4" longer on the right end than the bottom one. TIA

I've heard that they are, indeed different.  I don't remember where I read it, though.

Something about when using a 5 speed trans/linkage and the 4 speed plate, you won't be able to center the shifter.

I thought I read somewhere that end of the the selector shaft that has the rubberized plastic cove has to be cut down to allow enough side to side movement to get to all of the gears. But what I was actually looking for was picture of the cover plate for an actual 5 speed for future reference. Salvage yards here I come. lol

its the reverse lock out plastic piece on the bottom of the shifter that needs trimmed to make it get full range..

had to modify the plastic piece on the bottom of the shifter, extend a lever an inch, bend some linkages, and do some other things..

hardest part was adjusting the shifter so it had full travel, and still was able to select all gears.. took me like 2 hours of guess-and-checking. lol.

that being said, i dont think the PLATE is the part thats different.. i think its the shifter its self..

out of all the 4-5 speed swaps ive done, ive used the original 4 speed shifter on every one of them.. the old shifter on my 81 rabbit was SUPER worn, so i dindt have to modify it at all.. it already had enough travel to hit 5th gear..
