pulse time land rover pump on tdi

I just recived my mac tools pulse adaptor from ebay. I have been wanting to see where the dynamic advance is. My problem is when I hook up everything I get a 0 reading at idle but when I rev it and adjust the timing light advance up it dosent move the flywheel mark the right direction. I then tried the timing light on a gasser and worked prefectly. Has anybody ran into this? I am sure that this thing has to be advancing it runs way to good to be loosing timing in higher rpms. When I get to work tommorow I will try the snap on digital light we have. It has + and - degrees.

today I tried my pulse adaptor on my 82 rabbit at idle it reads 15btdc reving it the advance goes into the 20s btdc so that tells me my mtdi pump is not advancing and prob retarding timing as it revs. Im sure people on this fourm is using land rover pumps and got them tweaked good. help please
