Rebuilding an IP
« on: August 15, 2011, 07:28:19 am »
I picked up a used IP for $45 and not knowing its history (it doesn't have any play in the shaft), but I figured the thing to do would be to tear it down and re o-ring it, re-seal it, and give it a good going over.

2 things....

Do I need to oil the o-rings and stuff as I put them in?

The warning tag says that the pump must be pre-lubed before installation on the engine...does this just mean that it needs to have diesel in it and turned a few cranks before someone tries to run an engine with it?

O rings that go over shafts I always lube with vasoline or diesel.  Depending on if I want them to stick and hold while I put something else in there.  The springs that go inside the head and press on the plunger and camplate are a good use of petroleum jelly as well.  It just melts and gets burned anyway.

Yes always draw the air out and fuel in after rebuild and prior to starting.  Crack injector nuts to let air out there as well.  Once a bit wet on one or several tighten down and crank a bit more.  All lines delivering. All lines tight.  Now reinstall glow plug fuse and try the glow plug cycle and start.
