I bought a friend's 83 Quantum sedan last fall (it had been hit) and pulled the engine thinking that I'd use it for a VW fox wagon project, however with a new baby on the way, it's clear I won't be using it anytime soon.
The engine is a 1.6TD and the car was automatic with 116k miles that lived a large portion of its life in Florida. I drove the car and the engine ran fine, built boost and didn't seem to have any leaks or excessive smoke.
What you see in the pics is exactly how it came out of the car... I don't think this one has ever been tweaked / modded or fooled with. It has the correct oil cooler, injection pump and valve cover vent on it. I may even have the downpipe, but I'd have to look. The engine is somewhat dirty however it's been kept inside / covered in my garage since I pulled it. It comes as is... with what you see in the photos.
This would be a perfect setup for someone looking to replace their engine in their quantum or... if someone's looking to do a Fox swap like I was planning. You could also strip off all the Quantum bits and bolt on the appropriate manifolds and such then use it as an engine in a Mk1 / Mk2.... whatever you'd like.
I know original TD's are getting kind of tough to find, so I snatched this one up. I hope someone will put it to good use. I'm asking $500 and unfortunately, I'm unable to ship it (too many bad experiences). I may be able to arrange for delivery within a 100 mile radius of Cincinnati, OH or so depending on how things work out.
